Virat Kohli was left fuming after he was adjudged out in the 3rd over of RCB’s chase of 223 against KKR at Eden Gardens in their IPL 2024 match on Sunday, April 21. Kohli was going great guns, smashing 18, including a flick into the stands against Mitchell Star, in just 6 balls before he was out caught in the 3rd over in a bizarre fashion. Not many, especially Virat Kohli, was able to believe what just happened as Harshit Rana, the young KKR bowler, affected a caught and bowled after a slower one that slipped out of his hand.

Virat Kohli was deceived by the lack of pace in that full toss as he got a leading edge, which was safely pouched by the bowler Harshit Rana. Kohli did not walk off immediately as the on-field umpires sent the decision for referral to the third umpire. As the tension built in the middle, the replays were shown to the third umpire and it showed Virat Kohli standing well outside the popping crease in a bid to negate early swing. Moreover, Harshit Rana’s slower ball was dipping and the ball-tracking technology showed that it would have passed below the height of Virat Kohli’s height at the popping crease.

With the ball-tracking technology employed in the IPL, the waist height of all players at the normal standing position at the popping crease is stored and used when waist-high no-balls are referred to. The on-air commentators confirmed the same, saying the data was stored at the start of the season.

While the ball hit Virat Kohli’s bat above the waist height, the RCB star was standing outside the popping crease. Kohli was shocked by the third umpire’s call as he voiced his frustration at the on-field umpires. Kohli was seen walking back to the dressing room only to return and then have another animated chat with the umpires before he took the long walk back. Kohli was even seen having animated discussions with his teammates at the dugout after he was adjudged out.

WHAT DO ICC RULES SAY ABOUT WAIST-HIGH NO-BALLS?

According to rule 41.7 of ICC regulations ‘Bowling of dangerous and unfair non-pitching deliveries’: Any delivery, which passes or would have passed, without pitching, above waist height of the striker standing upright at the popping crease, is to be deemed to be unfair, whether or not it is likely to inflict physical injury on the striker. If the bowler bowls such a delivery the umpire shall immediately call and signal No ball.

The ICC rule clearly mentions that the ball has to be above the waist height of the striker standing upright at the popping crease. In Sunday’s instance, Kohli was well outside the popping crease.

It was a huge blow for RCB as they lost Virat Kohli early, but fifties from Rajat Patidar and Will Jacks kept them alive in the 223-run chase at Eden Gardens.
