Tim Cook is stepping down as Apple CEO after spending 15 years at the helm of the company. Cook, who succeeded Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in 2011, ushered the Cupertino giant in a new era. But at 65, he decided that it was time for him to pass the baton to John Ternus, a move which may have caught many offguard. But according to a new report, Tim has finally explained the reason behind his decision.

As per a report from Bloomberg, Cook revealed the reason for his decision to step down as CEO at an all-hands meeting following the announcement that he would pass the baton to John Ternus. The meeting was reportedly held at the Steve Jobs Theater, located inside Apple Park. During the meeting, Cook said, “I am healthy. My energy is high, and I plan to be in this new role for a long time.”

Why did Tim Cook step down as Apple CEO?

As per the report, Cook was asked about the reason for his decision to switch to the role of executive chairman. He claimed that he wanted to have the “best-ever transition” for a new CEO. According to Tim Cook, this required a few conditions – the “business had to be doing great,” aka, Apple needed to have strong finances, the “product road map to be incredible” and for Ternus to be “ready for the role.”

Apple recently recorded its best-ever quarter during the end of 2025. And Tim Cook reportedly told employees that the company had an exciting pipe line of new products. Combine these with John Ternus being prepared to fill in Cook’s shoes, the timing might have been just right. Tim Cook said, “These three things all intersected and they intersect now,” He said. “And so now was the time.”

What is Tim Cook’s new role at Apple?

The Apple veteran will serve as the executive chairman of the company from September 1, 2026. Tim Cook reportedly informed employees in the meeting that he was going to build upon Apple’s relations with partners. He said, “This is an area where we’ve built relationships over multiple years and a decade-plus, and I think I can help with that.” Cook added, “And I’ll probably help on some other things.”

Cook also explained that he will be available to support John Ternus. He said, “I’ll be here to offer my knowledge and experience and be a sounding board anytime I’m called upon.” Tim added that Apple remained his “top priority.”

As per reports, Cook could likely continue focusing on supply chain management and logistics, two areas where he is regarded as one of, if not the best, in the business.

John Ternus has some big shoes to fill. Leading a company like Apple cannot be easy, even if you have spent almost 25 years there. But it seems that Ternus is confident that under his leadership, Apple is about to disrupt the world again. He said, “We are about to change the world once again.”

Under Steve Jobs, Apple had the reputation of pioneering innovation, with devices such as the iPod and the iPhone. Ternus, who oversaw the development of products that accounted for roughly 80 per cent of Apple’s revenue, claimed that the company had an “incredible road map.”

He added that the Cupertino giant was going to release new products, with a key focus on AI. Ternus said, “This is the most exciting time to be building products and services at Apple in my entire career” – with AI at the center.”

Ternus is expected to be leading Apple’s fall 2026 event which will likely take place after he assumes the role of CEO on September 1.

Apple is rumoured to be working on a bunch of new AI devices, including a smart home speaker, a revamped Siri, AI smartglasses and even a tabletop robot.
