Taylor Swift is revisiting one of her most beloved songs with a candid backstory. The singer recently shared that she wrote Love Story at 17, fuelled by teenage frustration after her parents refused to let her go on a date, with an older man.

In an interview with The New York Times Magazine, where she was featured among the 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters, Swift reflected on how emotion and instinct have shaped some of her biggest hits.

THE STORY BEHIND LOVE STORY

Now 36, Swift said Love Story marked a turning point in her songwriting journey – the moment she stopped worrying about how her music would be received. She revealed that she has been writing since the age of 12 and realised early on that the songs she felt most strongly about often resonated the most with listeners, even if that connection came later.

Recalling the inspiration behind the track, Swift said, “I think the first time I felt I didn’t care if people hated this because I loved it so much was when I wrote the song Love Story when I was 17, sitting in my bedroom, mad at my parents because they wouldn’t let me go on a date with a guy who was too old, so I shouldn’t have been on a date with him anyway.”

Referring to her parents, Andrea Swift and Scott Swift, she added with a laugh, “And this is why you need to discipline your kids because they might write songs that go to No. 1.”

Swift also emphasised that public perception does not dictate her creative choices, even though she remains mindful of her fans. “Oftentimes, when I love it to a certain degree, that tends to match up with people,” she said. “And it could be that it doesn’t match up with the way people feel ’til six years later.”

HOW HER GROWING UP YEARS SHAPED HER MUSIC

Pointing to her 2017 album Reputation, Swift said she stood firmly by the project despite mixed reactions at the time. “I loved the Reputation album. I was like, ‘You guys say what you want. I know what I did. I love it. Go with God. Sorry. You can come around if you want. It’s OK if you don’t,’” she said.

A key theme in the interview was her belief that songwriting works best when it reflects where she is emotionally. Swift noted that younger years often bring a sharper intensity of feeling, which translates into more detailed storytelling.

“There’s an attention to detail when you’re 17–22 years old, and you’re longing, or you’re reaching and grasping, but you’re never holding someone’s attention or someone’s love or someone’s dedication,” she said. “You can’t understand why you spend all day thinking about it.”

Swift also looked back on how her personal experiences have shaped her music over the years. She later dated actor Jake Gyllenhaal in 2010, with songs like All Too Well widely believed to be inspired by that relationship.

Taylor Swift is engaged to Kansas City Chief’s Travis Kelce, with a grand wedding planned for July 2026.
