The Big Bang Theory franchise is set to return with another spin-off, this time centred on comic book store owner Stuart Bloom. Titled Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, the new series will bring a science fiction twist to the sitcom world and will see Kevin Sussman reprise his role from the original show.
The series joins other titles from the franchise, including Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. Young Sheldon ended in 2024 after seven seasons, while Deadline reported that season 2 of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is set to conclude in May 2026 and has already been renewed for a third season. It has also been seven years since The Big Bang Theory went off-air in 2019.

On April 26, HBO Max unveiled a first look at Stuart Fails to Save the Universe during a panel at CCXP Mexico City.
THE PLOT OF STUART FAILS TO SAVE THE UNIVERSE
The new spin-off takes the franchise into multiverse territory. According to the official logline, the show follows Stuart Bloom, played by Sussman, who “is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon”.
Stuart is joined by his girlfriend Denise, played by Lauren Lapkus, and his friends as they come across “alternate-universe versions” of familiar characters from The Big Bang Theory. The synopsis adds, “As the title implies, things don’t go well.”

Sussman is returning as Stuart, a role he played from seasons 2 to 12 of the original series. Also returning are Lapkus as Denise, Brian Posehn as Stuart’s geologist friend Bert, and John Ross Bowie as Barry Kripke, described in the material as “quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass”.
Because the show will feature alternate-universe versions of characters from The Big Bang Theory, more actors from the original sitcom could also appear.
In an interview with TV Line in July 2025, co-creator Chuck Lorre was asked whether Jim Parsons and Johnny Galecki, who played Sheldon and Leonard, would reprise their roles. Lorre replied, “I cannot speak to that.” He then added, “That is a closely guarded piece of information that, you know. I’ve taken a blood oath regarding.”
More recently, Parsons said during an appearance on The View in April 2026 that he would not return for a reboot. “I don’t believe I would do a reboot,” he said. Speaking about Sheldon, he added, “I can’t say I miss him, partly because, especially 12 years on a TV show where they’re writing for this specific actor, there’s a lot of me in that. Not the genius part, but there’s a lot of me in that.”
At the CCXP Mexico City panel, it was also revealed that Danny Elfman has created the original theme music for the new series.
WHEN DOES STUART FAILS TO SAVE THE UNIVERSE PREMIERE ?
The series is scheduled to debut on HBO Max in July 2026, although an exact release date has not been announced. Earlier, in February 2026, Lorre described the show to People as “a science fiction action-adventure comedy”.
Lorre also said, “We just finished principal photography, and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s a big swing. I think it will be revered or reviled. I’m not sure which.”
WHERE CAN VIEWERS WATCH IT?
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will stream on HBO Max. With Stuart at the centre of the story, returning cast members in place, and alternate-universe versions of familiar characters expected to appear, the series marks the latest expansion of The Big Bang Theory world ahead of its July 2026 launch.
