Maanayata Dutt turned emotional at the announcement event of Khalnayak Returns in Mumbai on Friday. The reaction came as her actor-husband Sanjay Dutt unveiled the poster and announcement video for the film.

Videos from the event, which are now circulating online, showed her wiping tears on stage and hugging producer Aksha Kamboj, as Sanjay stood by her side.

Maanayata on Sanjay’s long-awaited sequel

In another clip from the event, Maanayata said she had got “goosebumps” and described the sequel as a film Sanjay had wanted to make for a long time. She said the actor had gone through many highs and lows, and the love he received from people had kept him going. She added that actors often want to return to the roles that define them, and Ballu Balram was one such iconic character for Sanjay.

Maanayata also said discussions about the sequel had been going on for more than a decade. She recalled that the idea would often come up at home during casual evenings over food, drinks and conversations. Calling it a passion project, she said they had long spoken about making the film one day. She added that Khalnayak Returns would be the first production to come out of Aspect Entertainment. JioStudios and Three Dimension Motion Pictures are co-producers of the film.

Revisiting a cult classic

Khalnayak Returns is a sequel to Khal Nayak, which was released in theatres in 1993. The teaser for the new film shows Sanjay returning as Ballu Balram. In the video, he reminds a man about Ballu escaping from jail on October 10 at 10 pm. While smoking a cigarette, he breaks into the line, “Nayak nahi, Khalnayak hoon main,” before walking off in his signature style.

In an official statement, Sanjay said Khal Nayak remained very close to his heart and was still remembered with fondness. He said reviving the film had been a long-cherished dream and added that the rights had been legally acquired. He also thanked Subhash Ghai and the Mukta Arts team for entrusting them with the legacy, and said the makers hoped to create something special for longtime fans as well as a new generation.

Ballu Balram remains one of the most important roles of Sanjay’s career. He played the villain in Subhash Ghai’s 1993 film, which later came to be seen as a cult classic. Co-starring Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff, Khal Nayak was noted for its music and the performances of its cast.

Other work projects

Sanjay was last seen in Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar 2, which released in theatres on March 19. The film featured him as SP Chaudhary Aslam, while Ranveer Singh played Hamza Ali Mazari and Jaskirat Singh Rangi. The spy thriller has earned more than Rs 1,000 crore in India.

He will next be seen in Aakhri Sawal, directed by Abhijeet Warang. The film is scheduled to release in cinemas on May 8.
