Actor Salman Khan had no complaints about lying on the hot sand during the shoot of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s romantic drama, ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ (1999). Veteran cinematographer Anil Mehta revisited the days when he shot for the film with Salman and Aishwarya Rai.

While detailing how certain scenes of ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ were shot, Mehta shared that Salman’s energy on the set was infectious. “In the desert, Salman just went with it. Otherwise, which hero is going to lie there in the hot sand and sunny desert and say ‘Put sand on me, put sand on me,'” said Mehta as he revisited the shoot of the song ‘Tadap Tadap Ke’ during an interaction with Film Companion.

Mehta mentioned that Salman was completely in the moment, “He was doing it himself. That’s also infectious, you are drawing from that energy. Then, he started doing some random things, so I took the camera off the tripod and took it on my shoulder. I was with Salman in that moment, soaking in what he was doing. Later, the camera also points at the sun, which was a ‘no, no’ at the time. Today, it is the norm. But, it was the energy of the piece and the performances and then, of course, there was the master of drama at work – Sanjay.”

‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ was among the biggest Bollywood hits of 1999. Besides Salman and Aishwarya, the film also featured Ajay Devgn in a pivotal role. Anil Mehta won the National Film Award for Best Cinematography for the film.
