Promotion and growth are often used as synonyms. Many consider getting promoted as the only form of growth, but a closer look will bring out the differences between them. This, in turn, will help in selecting the right approach.

Aditya Kuchibhotla Who is a Chartered Accountant and a professional certified coach from the international coaching Federation (PCC-ICF)commented “By definition, promotion is the act of raising someone to a higher or more important position or rank 1. It is an external recognition of an individual’s contributions. Growth is the act or process or a manner of development and gradual increase 2. Even though growth has elements of external recognition, it is largely a journey within”.

A Promotion Strategy is a series of well-planned actions that an individual takes to achieve the next level in the organisational hierarchy at their workplace. Examples of Promotion Strategies would be networking with senior leaders and participating in initiatives that have the attention of senior leaders.

“A Growth Strategy is a series of well-planned actions that are taken by an individual to enhance their knowledge, skills, experience, and wisdom. Examples of Growth Strategies could be learning skills that support the career, and identifying and executing initiatives that are beneficial to the organisation.” says Aditya Kuchibhotla.

Promotion Strategy is focused on an event. Upon the occurrence of the event, the relevance of this strategy ends. Given the focus is solely on achieving the desired promotion, learning mostly gets deprioritized and happens only if it is mandatory.

According to Aditya Kuchibhotla “This may jeopardise growth once promoted to a new role. As a result, any promotion Strategy can, at best be, a tool to deliver results in the near term. Given the nature of promotion strategies, individuals solely focused on them may compromise on values and cut corners. As a result, adopting Promotion Strategies alone can lead to dissatisfaction in the long run”.

Growth strategies are aimed at personal growth and they focus on acquiring skills and experience. Even though personal growth may often lead to promotions, the process of growing does not stop with promotions. It continues even after getting promoted. As a result, a promotion becomes an event and not a destination in itself. Growth strategies are long-term in nature and promote value-based decisions. Though the growth in the near term is slow, these strategies deliver sustained growth in the long term, thus giving them a fulfilling career.

Adopting a mix of promotion and growth strategies seems to be an option. However, the temptation for material aspects like title and power might result in promotion strategies getting more importance over Growth Strategies. That will defeat the purpose of building a successful career.

Hence, for a career that is long-lasting and fulfilling, adoption of Growth Strategies is highly recommended. A promotion strategy is aimed at positional growth, while growth strategy is aimed at personal growth.
