Man in critical condition after Rottnest Island shark attack

A man in his 30s is critical after he was bitten by a shark at Rottnest Island on Saturday morning.

Emergency services were called to the island just before 10am after they were told a male person was believed to have been bitten by a shark.

WA Police said he was conveyed by boat to shore where he met the RAC rescue helicopter and is due to be flown to Royal Perth Hospital.

A St John Ambulance spokesperson said the man had critical injuries.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development had been notified of the incident. It said it was working with local authorities and would provide further information shortly.

The incident is believed to have taken place off Geordie Bay, one of the island’s northern beaches. It’s a popular spot for snorkelling and swimming.

Surf Life Saving WA said on social media a five-metre white shark was sighted at about 10am this morning 80 metres off shore.

Rottnest Island, also known as Wadjemup, is a protected reserve 19 kilometres off the coast of Fremantle. It is a popular holiday destination, famous for white sand beaches, clear water and quokkas.
