It goes without saying that without the referees, there would be no game.

No matter how many times it’s said, it still seems that people still think it’s OK to heap abuse on the refereeing teams – as was evident last weekend in particular.

One referee who was singled out in particular was Casey Badger, who was refereeing just her third NRL match.

Repeatedly during the Bulldogs-Titans match, Badger was approached by the players and eventually sent David Klemmer to the sin bin for dissent.

Bulldogs player Sam Hugheswas also charged with contrary conduct after appearing to push Badger and was fined $3,000.

“There are certain boundaries that can’t be crossed,” NRL head of football operations Graham Annesley said.

“Captains have the right to approach the referees to ask the reasons for a certain decision. That doesn’t give them the right to have a full-blown debate about whether a decision’s right or wrong.

“We have to remember it doesn’t only happen to female referees. There are plenty of players who have towered over male referees and attempted to exert some influence.”
