Leichhardt man faces court accused of shocking daylight cafe hit and run

A man faces seven charges after allegedly pinning a 67-year-old woman to a cafe wall and fleeing the scene.

The man will appear before NSW Bail Division court on Saturday accused of a serious hit and run in Sydney’s Inner West in October last year.

In shocking footage of the alleged incident, a silver BMW sedan can be seen driving slowly towards the Cupcake Room cafe on Norton Street in Leichhardt about 9.50am before quickly accelerating, hitting an elderly patron and leaving the scene.

The 67-year-old woman was treated at the scene and taken to hospital where she underwent surgery for lower body injuries.

Police allegedly found the man unresponsive shortly after the alleged incident inside the BMW on Elswick St, one street away from the cafe.

He was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment but released pending further investigation.

Seven months on, the now 35-year-old man was again arrested on Friday, May 15 and taken to Auburn Police Station.

He was charged with seven offences including aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – influence drug or drugs, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive under the influence, negligent driving (occasions grievous bodily harm), causing bodily harm by misconduct – in charge of motor vehicle, drive vehicle with illicit drug present in blood, fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm, and failing to stop and assist after impact cause injury.

He was refused police bail and will face court this afternoon.
