Tearaway fast bowler Mayank Yadav made his return to the Indian Premier League after a hiatus of 353 days. The Delhi-born pacer, known as one of the fastest bowlers to come out of the country, completed his full quota of four overs on Wednesday in Lucknow Super Giants’ home game against Rajasthan Royals.

Unlike last year, where he relied upon a lot of slower balls and barely touched the 145 kmph mark, Mayank bowled at full tilt today, troubling the batters with pace on several balls. But the rustiness of not bowling at a high level was evident, as the bowler conceded 56 runs in his four overs at the Ekana Stadium on Wednesday.

Mayank bowled at a high pace, touching 149 kmph multiple times in his spell. However, it took him till his very last over to breach the 151 kilometres per hour mark. But he did. And more importantly, it did not look like he had to put all his effort into the delivery stride to reach that level.

One of the trademarks of his spell was the slower balls that he executed throughout the innings. Mayank bowled at least one slower ball in his first three overs, which included a lovely loopy slower yorker in the first over of his spell.

He overdid the slower ball ploy in the final over of the innings and ended up conceding 20 runs against Ravindra Jadeja. While Mayank did not pick up a wicket and gave away 56 runs, fans would be happy that the fast bowler bowled 4 overs without much difficulty on Wednesday.

Here’s Mayank Yadav’s full spell against Rajasthan Royals, including the pace he bowled them, at the Ekana Stadium on Wednesday.

Mayank was handed the ball outside of the powerplay after Mohammed Shami and Mohsin Khan had already wrecked the Rajasthan top-order.

Score: RR (54/3 in 7 overs)

Mayank’s first over was a fine one, with the fast bowler exhibiting his natural rhythm as well as that looping slower ball, a new addition to his arsenal. It was only the last ball of the over, the one drifting down the leg side, that ruined his figures in his comeback over of the IPL.

Score: RR (62/4 in 9 overs)

Rishabh Pant made Mayank skip one over and brought him back from the other end. In between, Digvesh Rathi and Prince Yadav bowled two overs, which resulted in just 8 runs and the wicket of Rajasthan captain Riyan Parag. When Mayank returned to the attack, the Royals were under pressure not only to score runs but also to arrest the fall of wickets.

Score: RR (76/4 in 10 overs)

Shimron Hetmyer read Mayank like a dream in this over. He simply sat back in his crease and used his fast hands to smack the bowler in the first three balls of the over. Mayank made a comeback by reverting to his slower ones, this time on a length, to stop the flow of runs.

Score: RR (95/5 in 14 overs)

After an expensive second over, Mayank was taken off the attack. Mohammed Shami and Mohsin Khan bowled in between. Rajasthan sank further in this phase of play, losing Shimron Hetmyer. Ravindra Jadeja and Donovan Ferreira were the new men at the crease and continued to struggle to hit the big shots, a pattern that continued in the next over as well.

Score: RR (107/5 in 15 overs)

Score: RR (139/5 in 19 overs)

It was a little odd that Mayank was given the last over of the match to bowl. Bowling the final two overs requires a high level of skill in the first innings, as batters are looking to land some big blows in the last six balls. Rishabh Pant’s captaincy was definitely questionable on this one, and the execution from the bowler was even poorer.

19.1
Mayank Yadav to Ravindra Jadeja, four to start the final over. Mayank starts the final over with a slower ball at 112kph on a length, Jadeja spots it early, clears his front leg and powers it through mid-wicket for a boundary.

19.2
Mayank Yadav to Ravindra Jadeja, 2 runs. Mayank shortens the length and bowls at 139.7kph, Jadeja pulls it through wide mid-on. Aiden Markram fails to stop it cleanly, allowing the batters to come back for two.

19.3
Mayank Yadav to Ravindra Jadeja, lovely shot from Jadeja, a four as well. Mayank bowls another slower ball at 113kph on a short of a good length, Jadeja rocks onto the back foot and punches it straight back past mid-off with a vertical bat. With both mid-on and mid-off inside the circle, the ball races away to the fence.

19.4
Mayank Yadav to Ravindra Jadeja, 2 runs. Mayank puts pace on with a short delivery at 144kph, Jadeja miscues the pull towards backward square leg. Ayush Badoni runs in from the deep, attempts a one-handed pick-up, but fumbles and allows the second run.

19.5
Mayank Yadav to Ravindra Jadeja, 2 runs. Mayank bowls a length ball at 151.3kph, breaching the 150-mark for the first time this innings. Jadeja swings it away to deep backward square leg. Ayush Badoni makes no mistake this time and keeps it down to two.

19.6
Mayank Yadav to Ravindra Jadeja, beautiful finish to the innings by Rajasthan. It is a six. Mayank bangs it in short to end the innings, but Jadeja is ready for it. He gets into position quickly, swivels and pulls it hard over deep backward square leg for a towering maximum. Twenty runs come off the final over.

Score: RR (159/5 in 20 overs)

The final over of the match capped off the day for Mayank Yadav on a sour note. The bowler was at fault, bowling too many slower balls when the field was clearly set for on-pace, short-of-length deliveries. With Jadeja on strike, Mayank could have challenged him with pace, but perhaps due to a lack of confidence, he resorted to slower balls instead.

Three balls into the over, an angry Rishabh Pant berated the pacer, asking him to bowl at full pace. Mayank did, but ended up giving away 20 runs anyway in the final over.
