Adelaide has claimed a thrilling Showdown by one point after Brayden Cook nailed a game-winning goal with 10 seconds remaining.

Cook’s heroics gave Adelaide a 11.10 (76) to 11.9 (75) win over cross-town rivals Port Adelaide in a match which saw the two sides exchange leads inside the final minute.

After leading by as many as 21 points early in the final quarter, Adelaide found itself trailing with 46 seconds left when Port’s Joe Berry nailed a left-footed snap out of congestion.

Crows star Izak Rankine won a free kick shortly after the ensuing centre bounce and after he sent the ball forward, Dan Curtin found Cook with a handball, before Cook drilled the goal from an acute angle on the run from 45m out.

“I have no idea, everything is just spinning,” Cook told Fox Footy when asked what’s going through his head after his match-winner.

“I can’t even talk. That’s exactly why we practice our scenarios.

“All pre-season we’re practicing for these moments with five minutes out and one point down.”

Adelaide midfielder Sam Berry took home the Showdown Medal after being voted the best-on-ground following a 29-disposal, 19-tackle performance.

Earlier on Friday night, Fremantle held off a fast-finishing Western Bulldogs side to claim a 12-point win at Docklands Stadium.

The Dockers overcame a 26-point quarter-time deficit to claim the 17.12 (114) to 15.12 (102) win over a courageous Bulldogs side.

Fremantle kicked 10 goals in the second half, and oft-injured midfield star Hayden Young nailed three in a match-winning performance.

Shai Bolton kicked the game-sealer for the Dockers late in the fourth quarter, capping off a brilliant performance which saw him pick up 30 disposals, 16 score involvements and nine clearances.

Marcus Bontempelli was sublime once again for the Bulldogs, picking up a game-high 33 disposals, nine score involvements while also kicking two goals.

Fremantle’s win puts it on the top of the ladder with six matches still to be played in Round 8.

Luke Pentony will be the man on deck for tomorrow’s AFL coverage, and I will be back for Sunday’s double-header to wrap up Round 8.

Catch you all then!

Martin goes BANG on the umpires

By Chris De Silva

The standard of Umpiring was disgraceful. Despite their best efforts, the Crows won- just. The AFL should be ashamed of themselves

– Martin Klavins

You’re not wrong Martin, they made a fair few blues tonight and they’d be breathing a sigh of relief that those decisions didn’t end up costing Adelaide the four points in the end.

Andrew Dillon and Greg Swann were in the stands tonight and surely they’ve got to be worried at the standards.

Adelaide will feel justice has been done after dubious calls

By Chris De Silva

We’ve avoided a major, major controversy with Adelaide winning after the Crows were docked two goals.

The first was that Jake Soligo snap in the third quarter which was overturned by the ARC despite there appearing to be a lack of conclusive video evidence.

They then had a late Wayne Milera goal chalked off as Josh Rachele’s shepherd on the goal line was deemed to be a push in the back.

That one was mystifying to me. You see that sort of shepherd a hundred times during a round of footy, and it’s never given as a free kick.

To award that at that moment of the game was certainly something from the umpires.

“Imagine if Adelaide had lost this game,” Hinkley says on Fox Footy.

“Remember those two moments? They got the goal over the post taken away and then the push down to the Riverbank end by Rachele to take another goal.

“I’m sure they would’ve been a bit grumpy in town about that.

“It would’ve been another one of those moments in Showdown history.”

These finishes are no good for my health folks

By Chris De Silva

Chris De Silva, a master of close finishes. Need an exciting finish? A tense game to keep your party entertained? No problems, just call Chris….

– Mike

If I hadn’t already shaved my head, I’d have no hair left after these last two nights.

Absolutely unbelievable games of footy. I’d say tonight’s was better than last night if I had to pick between the two, just because of the oscillating fortunes in that final minute.

Who decided to fixture a double-header tonight?

That was a classic! What a finish! Tell me again AFL why this wasn’t a Friday night special. These overlapping Friday night schedules are atrocious.

Sam Berry is the winner of the Showdown Medal

By Chris De Silva

Adelaide midfielder Sam Berry is named the Player of the Match.

Berry finished the match with 29 disposals, a ridiculous 19 tackles, seven intercepts, seven inside 50s and five clearances.

An absolutely monstrous midfield performance from Adelaide’s No.3.

“I thought we had it lost then,” Berry says on Fox Footy.

“If there was anyone who could kick it, it was Brayden Cook, he’s got the most incredible skills, he’s Mr. Clutch.

“It [the second-last centre bounce] didn’t go to plan, but Ranks won the free kick.”

FT: Adelaide 11.10 (76) defeats Port Adelaide 11.9 (75)

By Chris De Silva

ADELAIDE WINS IT RIGHT AT THE DEATH! WHAT A BLOODY SHOWDOWN! THE GOAT SHOWDOWN MAYBE? I’M CALLING IT!

Absolutely unbelievable scenes here at the Adelaide Oval as the final siren sounds.

Port thought they’d won it, Adelaide thought they’d won it, then Port thought they’d won it again, and then Adelaide finally won it.

Holy smokes. I need about seven margaritas after that one.

Even after the Cook goal, Port had a chance! Ollie Wines had a chance to soccer the ball inside 50 after the ball had trickled to Port’s half of the ground following the last centre bounce, but fresh-aired it, and the siren sounded.

“I have no idea, everything is just spinning,” Cook tells Fox Footy when asked what’s going through his head after his match-winner.

“I can’t even talk. That’s exactly why we practice our scenarios.

“All pre-season we’re practicing for these moments with five minutes out and one point down.”

Unbelievable stuff from Cook, who is a boyhood Crows fan. Imagine how many times he’d envisaged downing Port in a Showdown growing up in the backyard.

One minute to go

The Crows are denied another goal!

By Chris De Silva

OH MY GOODNESS!

Wayne Milera thinks he’s kicked the sealer, but the umpire awards a free kick to Port for a push in the back on the goal line!

I’m sorry, I cannot believe that call. You never see that happen.

Five minutes remaining in the Showdown

By Chris De Silva

It’s officially sweaty palms time at the Adelaide Oval folks!

Could that overturned Soligo goal from the third quarter prove to be the difference?

Whitlock makes it a two-point ballgame!

By Chris De Silva

Jack Whitlock takes two massive marks and the second of them is at the top of the goalsquare!

He goes back and drills the set shot from directly in front to cut the margin to two points with six even minutes left.

What an absolutely brilliant game of footy this has been!

Adelaide’s backline is undermanned with Jordon Butts injured, could it pay dividends for Port?

Port’s pressure factor up to 208 in the last 10 minutes after they fell behind by 21 points earlier in the quarter.

Berry goals from close range to draw Port closer!

By Chris De Silva

Port Adelaide aren’t prepared to let go of the rope just yet!

A lovely long kick inside 50 from Kane Farrell and Joe Berry takes a lovely mark under heavy pressure.

Sneaky stuff from Berry as he plays dead for a second and then catches the Crows defence napping by playing on and running into the open goal.

Margin down to eight points with eight minutes left.
