Following the arrest of a man accused of killing a five-year-old woman, police on Thursday evening reportedly fired tear gas and rubber bullets at an unhappy crowd of protesters who had gathered at Alice Springs Hospital.
Jefferson Lewis, 47, was allegedly found in Charles Creek and had been seen escorting himself up and down the riverbed before being apprehended.
Before police could find him, residents who knew about his imprisonment claimed he had been beaten.
Around 10pm, a furious crowd gathered around him to demand that the area treat him, and he was taken to a hospital where he was treated.
After protesters hurled mistreatment at them and smashed police vehicle windows, officers were forced to use tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
As the soldiers attempted to move the group along, police vehicles were set on fire and jumped on.
After the body of Kumanjayi Little Baby* was discovered on Thursday by the Todd River, Lewis was the area of one of the Northern Territory Police’s largest gunfights.
Authorities allege Lewis, who was also staying at the station, had taken the young lady from her mother’s home as she slept when she vanished from Old Timers Aboriginal Town Camp on Saturday evening.
The child’s body was discovered by officers near Todd River, about five kilometers north of the tent, after five days of searching for the couple. Her cause of death is still undetermined.
Police confirmed Lewis ‘ arrest in a statement released on Thursday night, but he remained on the run.
The Northern Territory Police Force located and detained Jefferson Lewis at a house in Alice Springs” a short while back,” the statement read.

Peter Malley, the associate director of the NT Police, earlier on Thursday cautioned others to donate to Lewis.
We inform Jefferson Lewis’s home that we think he killed this child. Get him to the authorities station, and we’ll look after him, he said, but do not help him.
And I tell Jefferson Lewis,” We’re coming for you,”
The kid’s family said in a speech on Thursday evening that she was in need and loved and that living without her would be difficult.
The speech read,” I know you are in heaven with the rest of the home with Jesus, and you are with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.”
One day, you and your brother may satisfy you; we are sacrificing our lives for Jesus.
Without you, it will be very difficult to live the rest of our lives.
When he sees you in heaven,” Ramsiah [the girl’s brother ] is going to give you the biggest hug ever,” the girl’s brother says.
Rose Spencer, the great granddaughter of Kumanjayi Little Baby, recalls Lewis ‘ arrival about a week ago after being informed by Yuendumu camp members that he was not a welcome it.
We had faith in him as a community. He once resided in [our family], but he no longer does. She said,” We don’t trust people.”
Dole claimed that the police thought Lewis was aided in avoiding monitoring.
