A video of a woman using slippers to beat a man sitting inside a car has been widely circulated on social media. Some shared the video claiming: “A Bangladeshi jihadi was giving false advice to Hindu girls at Delhi University to trap them in love jihad. Then the girl students showed courage and caught the jihadi red-handed and beat him with shoes and slippers. Then they handed him over to the police.”

Another person wrote, “He was making indecent remarks about Brahmin daughters. Ambedkarites from the Bhim Army were welcomed by sisters/daughters with shoes and slippers. People with a rapist mentality from the Bhim Army should be taught such lessons.”

India Today Fact Check found that while the incident involved eve-teasing and harassment, it was from the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh — not Delhi University.

India Today Fact Check found that this incident is from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. There is no basis to the viral claims.

OUR PROBE

Reverse-searching keyframes from the video led us to it published by Bangladeshi news outlets, Boishakhi TV News and Banglanews24 on April 26. According to both channels, a female student from the University of Dhaka slapped an outsider for making obscene gestures and harassing female students.

We then conducted a keyword search and came across a report by The Daily Campus published on April 26. As per the report, the man was making obscene gestures and harassing female students. The incident took place on the afternoon of April 26 near the Faculty of Business Studies of the University of Dhaka.

The report quoted the University’s Assistant Proctor Ali Mohammad Kawsar as saying, “The young man does not seem to be from the university; he may be an outsider. The students detained him and beat him up. Later, we rescued him with great difficulty and handed him over to the police.”

Thus, we concluded that the video is neither related to “love jihad” nor caste violence.
