Remarkable kick from Jack Gunston! What a goal!

By Dean Bilton

Nearly an impossible set shot there for Gunston, tight to the boundary from 50 out and into the wind. From the moment it left the boot it had the perfect shape on it, and it has absolutely split the middle.

Two big late goals for Hawthorn, whose lead is now back out to 21.

Tom Barrass is an unlikely goal scorer for the Hawks!

How good’s the stand rule? The umpire was almost simultaneously yelling “stand!” and “get out!”, and none of the Suns players knew who was being told to do what. Turned out Ugle-Hagan was standing over the mark and needed to “get out”, while Witts was in the right spot and needed to “stand”. The wrong man did the wrong thing because nobody knew what was happening and Barrass was marched within range.

It’s his first goal as a Hawk and second ever in the AFL. It’s a huge moment in this game of footy.

Ben King does not miss in 2026

By Dean Bilton

He’s a set shot deadeye, and the Suns have pulled this margin back to single figures.

Gold Coast has built this comeback on forcing turnovers out of the Hawks, which they simply couldn’t do for the first quarter and a half. And now that King’s in the game, things are really looking up.

Connor Nash finally settles the Hawks back down

By Dean Bilton

A deep breath for all the Hawthorn fans. They needed that just to stop the Gold Coast run. Nash nailed Rowell in a big tackle, and though the Brownlow Medallist had next to no prior opportunity whatsoever, the free kick was paid.

Big tackle, big goal. Hawks settle.

Ben King makes it six in a row for the Suns!

By Dean Bilton

Incredible, it’s an 11-point game!

A poor turnover in the middle of the ground from the Hawks, Macdonald dropping a mark he really should have taken, and Powell’s subsequent kick inside 50 to King was a scorcher. Set shot converted, game all the way back on.

Bailey Humphrey gives Gold Coast the first of the second half

By Dean Bilton

First goal of this quarter was always going to be important, and it’s the Suns who have it.

That one came from a brilliant Ugle-Hagan mark at half-forward, a big fly and contested grab. His squaring pass found Humphrey on the 50, and he nailed his set shot. Back to 16 points, incredibly.

Off and running for the second half

By Dean Bilton

We’re about to get back underway for the second half in Launceston. Just saw some footage of Sam Mitchell in the rooms at half-time, and he was giving the Hawthorn midfield group one hell of a spray. Couldn’t read his lips totally, but there was at least one word I could make out, and he used it quite a lot.

Interesting second half ahead. Here we go.

Ben Long has kicked another! Suns have another!

By Dean Bilton

Two goals in the last 30 seconds of the quarter for Gold Coast! The Suns go straight out of the middle, send the ball in long, pick up the scraps and then snap a big goal on the run through Ben Long.

A big shift late in this quarter.

Bailey Humphrey makes it three in a row for the Suns

By Dean Bilton

Tom Barrass dropped the intercept mark and then fell over, and from there the Suns had the numbers in front of goal. Humphrey was clean and snapped a very nice goal.

Suddenly things don’t look too bad for the Suns. They’ve arrested the momentum late in the term.

Ben Long makes it two in a row for the Suns

By Dean Bilton

Classic stoppage goal from the Suns. So much congestion around the ball up at the top of the square, but the tap was out into the space and right into the path of the running Long.

A bit of field position and a couple of goals for Gold Coast. One more before half-time would certainly be handy.

Lachie Weller pulls one back for the Suns

By Dean Bilton

It’s his second of the afternoon and only Gold Coast’s third goal for the game. Boy they needed that.

Jed Walter did well to crash the pack there and prevent the intercept mark, and from the resulting scrimmage Weller was able to receive the ball and snap the goal. Still plenty of time in this second quarter.

Connor Macdonald finishes off a fine Hawthorn move

By Dean Bilton

Rioli tried to run the ball out of defence through the middle but was monstered in a gang tackle. From there the Hawks were off, and a smart handball chain released Macdonald through the 50, where his shot was true.

It’s out to 46 points. This is quite incredible, the Hawks every bit as good as the Suns have been bad.

Make it three for Jack Gunston!

By Dean Bilton

As soon as the Hawks got out of their defensive 50 they had the whole field to work with, and worked it up to Gunston with ease.

Sam Collins thought the kick to Gunston was touched (it was) so went tackle Gunston after the mark, but the umpire had called a mark. The umpire then had no choice but to pay the 50, which made sure of the goal.

Jarman Impey bangs through another! All Hawks!

By Dean Bilton

The Hawks are indeed playing very well here. So well organised, so in sync, so clean with the ball. But the Suns are witches hats out there defensively. Truly alarming stuff.

Hawthorn just picked through the Suns straight through the corridor, and Impey was released to have a shot on the run from 50. Of course he nailed it.

Jack Gunston has his second goal

By Dean Bilton

Nick Watson again. He exploded into space on the wing, reading the play better than anyone and putting a gap between him and the chasing Powell.

Watson’s kick found Gunston, who easily did the rest. One-way traffic out there right now.

Massimo D’Ambrosio snaps another for the Hawks

By Dean Bilton

Suns are still miles off it. Pressure and defensive effort is not at a standard befitting a top-four contender.

D’Ambrosio just held off the back of that stoppage and had all the time he needed to gather and snap the goal. Lead out to 21 points.
