Cameras are rolling in the French Riviera with the fourth season of The White Lotus officially in production.

Mike White’s travel porn cross social satire has begun filming and also revealed some plot details.

The series will be set during the famed Cannes Film Festival and be a treatise on fame and celebrity. Does that mean some of the actors that have been cast, including Helena Bonham Carter and Steve Coogan, will be playing versions of themselves?

Who knows. But imagine if they did, especially given some of the comedic talent involved. Oh, the hijinks! Coogan, at least, has experience sending himself up through his and Rob Brydon’s The Trip film series.

Cannes is noted for being the glitziest international film festival on the calendar featuring elaborate red carpets with big name stars, super yachts and endless parties around the Croisette.

You just know White can do something eviscerating with that very specific Cannes culture of mostly high-end, auteur-driven non-English language films and the power games and ego trips.

The Hotel Martinez will stand in as the White Lotus Cannes in the show, but it is not the only location for the upcoming fourth season.

The show will also film at the Airelles Chateau de la Messadiere in St Tropez, about a 90-minute drive from Cannes, and where residences can reportedly cost up at $35,000 a night. That will be branded within the series as the White Lotus du Cap.

Filming will also take place in Paris and Monaco, but the production did not confirm if any scenes will be set at hotels that would function as fictional White Lotuses. Paris is expected to be a small part of the show.

Reality TV junkie White told W magazine that he came up with the concept for the fourth season while he was filming Survivor 50, which he returned to compete on as a contestant for the anniversary instalment.

“It’s a bit about fame, about who has the world’s attention, who is the plus-one, and how that can organise a relationship,” he said. “Some people are satisfied with the love of just an intimate partner, and some people need the love of strangers and a bigger kind of attention.”

The rest of the cast also includes Kumail Nanjiani, Vincent Cassel, Heather Graham, Sandra Bernhard, Chris Messina, Ari Graynor, Alexander Ludwig, Chloe Bennet, Max Greenfield, Rosie Peretz, Dylan Ennis, Marissa Long, AJ Michalka and Australia Caleb Jonte Edwards.

The White Lotus usually features an ensemble cast of privileged, entitled, often clueless guests, mostly American, staying for a week at an expensive resort, clashing with the staff and locals.

So far, every season has opened with a death, and then flashes back to the start of that week.

The fourth season is expected to premiere in 2027.
