Wrestling superstar and actor John Cena will come to Perth as part of a weekend of WWE events, in a major tourism coup for Western Australia.
In an announcement during WWE’s biggest event Wrestlemania overnight, the organisation announced that Cena would come to Perth for his last ever Australian match.
“This October, John Cena lands in Perth for a full-scale WWE takeover,” the promotional video stated.
“It all starts with SmackDown, ends with Raw. And in the centre of it all, Cena takes the spotlight for one of WWE’s most massive nights in Perth.
“Three nights, one epic weekend. All at RAC Arena. WWE Takeover Perth this October.”
Announced in January, the three-event series over an October weekend will include a SmackDown, a Raw, and a third premium live event yet to be announced by the organisation, all at RAC Arena.
The event was secured by the WA Government under its major events program, and comes after last year’s successful Elimination Chamber hosted at Optus Stadium.
Figures released by the Government showed the event drew 16,000 out-of-state visitors, who spent more than $35 million while in WA.
Cena is scheduled to fight Cody Rhodes — who made the trip to Perth for the Elimination Chamber event last year — for the WWE championship at this weekend’s Wrestlemania.
Cena, a beloved figure of world wrestling, turned heel for the first time in his decades-long career and became a villain in the sport’s famed storylines, and is in his last year in the WWE.
More to come.
