A live electric wire fell on a school bus in Kalaburagi city, Karnataka, on Monday, critically injuring a woman. However, 11 children with intellectual disabilities aboard the bus escaped unharmed due to the vehicle’s rubber tyres.
The bus belonged to Parivart Buddhi Mandya School, which serves children with intellectual disabilities. The live wire fell on the parked bus as students were boarding. Bhagyashree, a woman assisting her child onto the vehicle, inadvertently touched the bus, causing the electric current to pass through her body. She suffered severe burns on her stomach, legs, and hands and collapsed on the spot.

Local residents acted swiftly, evacuating the frightened children and rushing Bhagyashree to a private hospital, where she remained in critical condition.
Kalaburagi South MLA Allamprabhu Patil and City Police Commissioner Dr Sharanappa SD visited the site to assess the situation.
This incident has sparked outrage amongst residents, coming on the heels of another tragedy in which a schoolboy lost his life due to a similar electrical hazard near a bus stop. Locals are holding the Kalaburagi Municipal Corporation responsible for gross negligence and its repeated failures to ensure public safety.
“The negligence is unforgivable,” a local resident said. “How many lives will it take for the authorities to act?”
The municipal corporation has faced mounting pressure to address these hazards urgently. Meanwhile, an investigation into the incident is underway, and residents have demanded immediate action to prevent such accidents in the future.
