BJP leader Agnimitra Paul has made serious allegations against the Kolkata Police, claiming that they used water cannons mixed with chemicals on student protestors during the Nabanna Abhijan protests. Paul, who has been vocal in her criticism of the police’s handling of the protests, described the force as “spineless” and accused them of violating the Supreme Court’s orders, which had directed the West Bengal government to refrain from taking action against peaceful protestors. Paul further alleged that the police not only resorted to lathi-charges and stone-pelting against unarmed demonstrators but also deployed water cannons containing harmful chemicals to disperse the crowds. She shared photographs purportedly showing the effects of the chemical-laced water on protestors, adding that the police’s actions highlight their inability to protect the women of the state and their willingness to use extreme measures against those who dare to protest. These allegations have sparked outrage and calls for an independent investigation into the police’s conduct during the protests. The BJP has demanded accountability from the state government, with Paul urging the Supreme Court to take swift action against those responsible for these alleged human rights violations.
