Dubai, which has been hit with heavy rain, wind, and hail in recent days, experienced a bolt of lightning strike its tall surface.

Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, experienced the strike in the wake of the extreme and rare weather change in theregion that is impacting several major locations, including Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

The towering structure, standing at about 2,722 feet, looked like it was fighting the sky against a backdrop of dark, dramatic background.

WHAT”S HAPPENING IN THE MIDDLE EAST?

A rare powerful storm system has swept across the Middle East in the past few days.

Heavy thunderstorms have hit the United Arab Emirates (UAE), bringing intense rain, lightning, strong winds, and large hail.

Similar stormy weather has affected parts of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, northern Oman, and even areas near Iran.

Some desert regions received 3 to 6 inches of rain in just days, nearly a year’s worth of rain, which has raised flood risks.

The storms have caused waterlogged roads, flight delays, and safety warnings. Driven by a slow-moving low-pressure system, this unusual weather is expected to ease soon, but caution remains advised in the region.

WHY DOES LIGHTNING STRIKE TALL BUILDINGS?

Lightning does not always fall straight down from clouds. Tall structures like the Burj Khalifa can trigger lightning themselves.

When a storm builds up an electric charge, the building’s great height creates a path for a “leader” to jump upward from its tall structure. This type of strike is common on very high towers.

In simpler terms, Burj Khalifa acts like a natural lightning magnet because it reaches so far into the stormy sky.

HOW DID BURJ KHALIFA STAY SAFE?

The real wonder is not the lightning itself, but how the building handles it without any damage.

Engineers designed the tower with a smart lightning protection system that keeps everyone inside safe and the structure unharmed.

At the very top of the world’s tallest building sits a special lightning rod. That rod senses the storm and helps guide the lightning to hit there first.

Once the lightning strikes, the tower’s strong steel frame works like a giant safe path. The electricity flows down along the outside of the building through metal conductors.

Afterwards, a good grounding system at the bottom then sends all that powerful energy harmlessly into the earth. This stops the electricity from jumping inside the building or hurting people, elevators, lights, or other equipment.

The steel skeleton of the structure also acts like a protective shield, keeping the dangerous current away from the inside spaces.

This design is also the reason why the Burj Khalifa has been hit by lightning many times over the years but is yet to sustain any damage.

Each time, the system works perfectly. People inside feel nothing unusual, and the building shows no marks afterward.

With changing weather bringing more strong storms, tall buildings need to be ready for nature’s power. The Burj Khalifa shows how smart engineering can turn a scary event into something safe and even beautiful to watch.
