Before the start of the T20 World Cup 2026, Sunil Gavaskar made a promise to the Indian team and Suryakumar Yadav. The Indian legend, who is known for his celebrations after India win a big game, promised Suryakumar that he would dance with joy if the team managed to defend their crown.

“When you lift the trophy and receive it, I will start dancing,” Gavaskar said. “Dancing is my cardio. Everyone else does intense cardio, but I can’t do that at my age. So I do a little bit of cardio, and that’s dancing. There’s so much joy in seeing your captain and your country’s flag going up. Sometimes emotions just come out.”
On Sunday, March 8, Gavaskar delivered on the promise.
At first, just ahead of the presentation, the Indian legend was seen dancing, which was captured by the broadcasters.
As India defeated New Zealand to lift the T20 World Cup for the third time, the legendary batter couldn’t contain his excitement and joined the Indian team in their victory celebrations. Gavaskar decided to shake a leg with Suryakumar, and the Indian skipper obliged. The portion of Gavaskar and Suryakumar’s dance can be seen in the following video:
WHAT DID GAVASKAR SAY ABOUT SURYAKUMAR?
Gavaskar delivered high praise for Suryakumar after the T20 World Cup win. Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar said that Suryakumar was in the mold of Rohit Sharma and is leader in the dressing room that everyone looks up to.
“He’s such a calm, cool, collected captain, pretty much in the mold of Rohit Sharma. Always smiling, always positive in his attitude and his approach. He started off by saving India from an awkward situation against the USA, scoring 84. He’s clearly the leader and everyone looks up to him,” said Suryakumar.
With the win, Suryakumar became the fourth Indian captain to win a World Cup.
