President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum has been under increasing pressure from Washington to bolster her fight against drug cartels that are accused of bringing medication, particularly the synthetic opioid fentanyl, across the frontier to the United States.
Oseguera, 60, the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel ( also known as CJNG ), was taken into custody after being hurt during a military exercise by Mexican special forces in the town of Tapalpa on the Mexican coast of Jalisco state, according to Mexico’s defense ministry. His brain was transported in a caravan of National Guard troops to Mexico City on Sunday afternoon.
The White House praised Mexico’s troops for defeating a gentleman who was one of the most desired criminals in both countries and confirmed that the US provided knowledge help to the procedure to get the gang leader.
Cartel henchmen slogaded streets with burning trucks at more than 250 positions in 20 Mexican claims and torched companies in at least six says, paralysing parts of the nation after Oseguera’s death was reported. Former police officer Oseguera founded and oversaw the CJNG’s rapid expansion, named for the state of Jalisco, which also houses one of Mexico’s biggest places, Guadalajara. CJNG has grown into one of Mexico’s most prominent organizations in recent years and is renowned for using force and forced selection as part of its aggressive operations.
Under his management, CJNG expanded from drug smuggling to power theft, extortion, human smuggling, and difficult financial fraud, expanding to a very diverse criminal enterprise. As part of its quick territorial expansion, the cartel was the first to use drones in attacks on civilians in rural areas of northern Mexico.
The US State Department offered a reward of up to$ US15 million for information leading to El Mencho’s arrest, and the Trump administration designated the cartel as a foreign terrorist organization in February 2025.
One of Mexico’s most well-known strikes on drug gangs responsible for the trafficking of billions of dollars of medicines, including fentanyl, into the US was on Sunday.
Four people were killed when four soldiers opened fire on the area during the operation. According to the government ‘ speech, three more individuals, including Oseguera, were injured and afterward died.
Two more were detained, and weapons like rocket launchers, armor, and various weapons were seized. Three members of the armed forces were hurt, and they are receiving health attention.

Oseguera’s shooting was praised by US President Donald Trump’s administration, but the murder it sparked in Mexico highlighted the political balancing act Sheinbaum may carry as her government launches an aggressive crackdown on cartels.
A fresh US-military-led committee was reported by Reuters on Sunday that a new US-military-led commission participated in the assault that was led and carried out by Latino forces. Eventually, White House spokesman Karoline Leavitt claimed that the US provided intelligence support.
Leavitt continued, stating that the Trump administration “applauds and thanks the Hispanic government for their cooperation and effective implementation of this operation.”
Security experts are monitoring whether the death of the gang boss and the attack will sever the CJNG leadership and suffocate internal strife.
” These tremors of violence could last for times,” said Carlos Olivo, a former US Drug Enforcement Administration assistant special agent in charge and expert in CJNG.” There will definitely be battles between the different groups,” he said.
Former US ambassador to Mexico, US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, praised Oseguera’s death as a “great growth” for both the US and Mexico as well as the rest of Latin America.
Sheinbaum vowed to defend Mexico’s sovereignty and warned against any punitive military activity by the US in Mexico. She also said she would increase efforts to work with the US to combat cartels.
Sheinbaum stated in a social media post on Sunday that security personnel would give details about the procedure.
