A newly constructed road in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri has sparked outrage after a viral video showed villagers allegedly peeling it apart with their bare hands, raising serious questions about the quality of public infrastructure.
The road, built at a reported cost of Rs 77 lakh, connects village Basait in the Kishni area. While repair work is still underway, locals claim the construction is so poor that chunks of the surface can be easily removed without any tools. In the widely circulated video, residents are seen lifting layers of the road, prompting allegations of substandard materials and shoddy execution.

The controversy quickly gained political traction after Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav shared the video on social media, questioning the government’s claims of development. She also hinted at possible corruption and negligence in the construction process, amplifying the issue beyond the village.

Following the backlash, officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) visited the site to assess the situation. Assistant Engineer Pushpendra Kumar conducted an on-ground inspection, while Executive Engineer A.K. Arun maintained that the road meets prescribed quality standards. He stated that the construction is still in progress and assured that any deficiencies, if found, would be rectified.
However, villagers remain unconvinced. They argue that a road built with proper materials and supervision would not deteriorate so easily, even during construction. For them, the visuals are proof of deeper systemic issues.
While authorities have ordered a review of the viral footage and the construction work, the incident has once again put the spotlight on the quality of infrastructure projects and accountability in public spending.
