A teenage girl from Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh was found dead in a suspected ‘honour killing’ case after meeting her cousin-turned-boyfriend

A teenaged girl who was allegedly in a romantic relationship with her cousin has been found dead in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri in a suspected case of ‘honour killing’ that has sent shockwaves across the local community.
Neighbours and relatives had long speculated that tensions between the girl’s family and her maternal uncle stemmed from an old grudge, but when the truth came to light, the community was left stunned.

Following the death of her grandmother two years ago, the girl often made trips to her uncle’s home in Mohammadabad, where she would spend time with her uncle’s son, her cousin. Unbeknownst to the family, the two teenagers had fallen in love. As their bond grew stronger, unease began to spread among their relatives.
In an effort to end the relationship, the girl’s uncle arranged his son’s marriage, believing the matter would resolve itself quietly. But he was mistaken as the love affair continued, even after the cousin’s wedding.
On May 13, the girl reportedly used her father’s phone to arrange a meeting with her cousin at the Rasulabad underpass. The meeting took place in the early hours of May 15. The young girl allegedly expressed a desire to elope, fearing they would never be allowed to be together. Alarmed by the situation, the boy contacted key members of the family, including his father as well as the girl’s father.
The girl was subsequently taken to a relative’s house in Nagla Sudama, where several family members convened in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. The family spent several hours trying to persuade the girl to abandon the relationship and return home. However, she remained resolute, reportedly unwilling to give up the relationship despite familial objections. At some point, she abruptly left the house unnoticed.
What unfolded after this family intervention led to a tragic chain of events, now under active police investigation. After a frantic search, her lifeless body was found hanging from a banyan tree with a veil.
Following an initial investigation, police from Bewar station detained three individuals — her uncle, the girl’s cousin and another close male relative. The girl’s family has filed a formal complaint. When questioned, the cousin admitted he wanted to end the relationship after his marriage, but the girl insisted on getting married.
Following standard procedure, Bewar police have sent the body for a post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, the girl’s grieving family, along with several relatives, gathered at the police station, demanding justice and swift action.
