The victim of an alleged hit-and-run crash who was killed while he was trying to jump start his own car was a father of two young children, it has emerged.

Sandy Sandhu, also known as Sarabdial Singh, died in hospital on Sunday after suffering catastrophic injuries in an alleged hit and run in the early hours of the morning.

Mr Singh, 33, was attempting to jump start his car alongside the North South Motorway at Dry Creek in Adelaide’s north when he was struck by a Nissan ute.

A court was told that the father of two was left “amputated at the hip” in the crash and died in hospital some hours later.

Now, his widow has paid an emotional tribute to him through a GoFundMe page set up to support the family in the wake of the tragedy.

On the page, Parabhjit Kaur wrote: “It was sudden and violent. In a matter of seconds, everything we knew was taken from us.

“The impact is devastating. He suffered catastrophic injuries, including the loss of his leg at the scene, multiple broken ribs, and severe damage to his pelvis and internal organs.

“Despite every effort, his body could not recover from the trauma.”

She went on to describe the heartache the sudden loss has already caused the Findon-based family.

“He leaves behind two beautiful babies – a baby girl and a baby boy – and his wife, who is here on a student visa, now facing this unimaginable loss alone in a foreign country,” Ms Kaur wrote.

“We are not only grieving the love of our lives, but also trying to understand how we move forward without him. The pain is indescribable.”

On Monday, Harrison Beckell, 22, from Mallala, appeared at Elizabeth Magistrates Court charged with causing death by dangerous driving and leaving the scene of a collision after causing death.

A police prosecutor told the court that in the moments leading up to the tragedy, Mr Beckell’s car had been seen “swerving and drifting from left to right” on the road.

It was claimed that Mr Beckell had been disqualified from driving just a day before the crash and he had been arrested some hours afterwards at an address in Andrew’s Farm.

The court was told that witnesses had seen Mr Beckell “vomiting by the side of the road” and calling his girlfriend asking to be picked up from the scene.

The court was told a witness had reportedly heard him say at one stage: “It’s the police, I’m f**ked.”

A SAPOL spokesman said Mr Beckell gave a positive alcohol reading of 0.130 at the time of his arrest – almost two hours after the crash.

He is yet to enter any pleas and is next due to appear in court on June 11 in Adelaide after being granted supervisory bail.

The GoFundMe page for Mr Singh’s family has raised more than $36,000.
