As India tightens its diplomatic and strategic stance against Pakistan following the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that killed 26 people, several Pakistani nationals have been seen making hurried exits from the country. Among them, a Pakistani visitor who spoke to India Today TV expressed disappointment over India’s decision to close the Attari-Wagah border.

“We came here to attend an event. We had a visa for 45 days, but we have to leave India in this condition. We came here on April 15,” he said. Reacting to the closure of the key border point, he added, “Closing the border is a wrong move. There should be brotherhood between the two nations. But whatever is happening, is wrong.”

When asked about the suspected Pakistani involvement in the Pahalgam attack, the man declined to draw conclusions. “Nobody can tell who orchestrated the attack,” he said.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of External Affairs announced a set of sweeping measures aimed at diplomatically isolating Pakistan in response to the attack. These include the immediate closure of the Attari-Wagah border and the suspension of the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani nationals. All existing visas issued under the scheme have been revoked, and Pakistani citizens currently in India have been asked to leave within 48 hours.

Authorities have also directed that all Pakistani nationals with valid travel documents who entered India recently must return to Pakistan by May 1, 2025. The closure of the border, a significant conduit for trade and people-to-people contact, marks a severe downturn in bilateral engagement.

In another development, a soldier died after security forces established contact with terrorists hiding in Udhampur and a gunfight broke out.

“Based on specific intelligence, a joint operation with J&K Police was launched today in Basantgarh, Udhampur. Contact was established and a fierce firefight ensued. One of our Bravehearts sustained grievous injuries in the initial exchange and later succumbed despite best medical efforts. Operations remain ongoing,” Indian Army’s White Knight Corps said on X.
