Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Wednesday, March 25, asked the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to take action on a representation filed by members of the Jubilee Hills Co-operative House Building Society against unauthorized construction works by a cafe.
Justice NV Shravan Kumar was hearing a petition filed by two members who alleged that the House Building Society had gone against the sanctioned building plan by allowing Caffe Jubilee to undertake construction and unauthorized commercial activities in the community hall, Times of India reported.
According to the petitioners, GHMC had granted permission in November 2013 for a structure consisting of a sub-cellar, a parking cellar and two upper floors intended exclusively for a community hall for the society members.
Hearing the matter, the court directed GHMC to take appropriate action on the property within three weeks.

Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner RV Karnan on Thursday, March 26, asked officials to take on desilting and repair of drainage systems on a war footing in preparation for the monsoon (post June).
Holding a meeting with Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar at the Old Police Commissionerate Office in Basheerbagh, the GHMC chief asked field-level staff to ensure permanent solutions are provided to the worst affected waterlogging points in the city.
Officials were further asked to securely cover all open manholes to prevent any threat to public safety and to remove encroachments from footpaths.
Additionally, officials were asked to rectify engineering defects on roads to prevent accidents and to ensure free flow of traffic near ongoing flyover and underpass construction sites.
“Ensuring that there is no loss of life or property during the monsoon is the primary responsibility of officials. GHMC will work closely with the police department to further improve urban infrastructure, with special focus on road maintenance and city beautification.” the GHMC Commissioner said, adding that Rs 25 crore will be allocated exclusively for traffic improvement-related works in all zones.

An Iranian health official says the death toll from the war in Iran has reached at least 1,937 people.
Iran’s Deputy Health Minister Ali Jafarian gave the figure to the pan-Arab broadcaster Al Jazeera on Thursday, March 26. He said 240 of the dead were women and 212 were children.
More than 24,800 others have been wounded so far, he added. Iran has not offered any official death toll figures in days.
US President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that Iranian leaders should engage “before it is too late, because once that happens, there is NOT TURNING BACK.”
The post comes a day after Trump insisted a deal is near. He said again that Iran is “‘begging’ us to make a deal” after the US pitched a 15-point ceasefire plan that Iran rejected.

Trust in Trump remains high among Republicans, poll shows
About three-quarters of Republicans approve of Trump’s handling of the presidency, and a similar 70 per cent approve of how he’s handling Iran.
Many Republicans continue to have “a great deal” or “quite a bit” of trust in the president to make the right decisions on foreign issues. About half place a high level of trust in him when it comes to the use of military force outside the U.S. Roughly the same percentage of Republicans have a high level of trust on his dealings with adversaries and allies.
Sharon Fuller, 68, is a firm backer of the president and approves of his handling of the job, as well as the war in Iran.
A retired hospital analyst from Ocklawaha, Florida, Fuller expressed some reservations about the war but called Trump a “huge patriot” and said she’s been impressed with how the stock market has done since he became president again.
“I don’t really agree with the war, but on the other hand, I think it’s a necessity at this point,” she said.
Young designer in Tehran speaks of growing ‘hopelessness’
Iran’s internet shutdown is badly hurting many businesses, as well as limiting access to news of the war inside the country. A designer in her mid-twenties says her fashion products company is “on the verge of closing” as online sales have ground to a halt.
She added a nearby strike had damaged her apartment in central Tehran. Speaking on condition of anonymity, she shared with The Associated Press a photo of her street showing it filled with debris and broken glass from the blast wave.
She said she had gone to stay at her parent’s house where she felt safer.
“I don’t leave the house much except to buy necessities. The checkpoints are still in place and every night, a few supporters of the government hold rallies throughout the city. To be honest, I don’t dare go near the damaged or dangerous areas,” she added, referring to security checkpoints set up across the capital.
Iran has repeatedly restricted internet access since security forces shot thousands of anti-government protesters in early January. Rampant inflation has also throttled the economy. The designer said she has been forced to live on her small savings.
“I think we’ve experienced everything bad possible. We’ve seen it all, from the terrible atmosphere of January and the killings and arrests to the war.”
Egypt’s top diplomat is in Lebanon for talks
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Beirut on Thursday amid a swirl of diplomatic discussions about the Iran war.
Abdelatty said that, in shuttling messages between Iran and the United States, Egypt has noted a mutual “desire for calm, for the exploration of negotiations” on both sides. But he warned the talks have not yielded “specific conclusions.”
When asked about Egypt’s role in mediating between Israel and Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah, he told reporters that Egyptian diplomats were voicing to all parties their opposition to Israeli occupation and destruction of civilian infrastructure in southern Lebanon.
He said the goal was to prevent the region “from sinking into a state of chaos from which it cannot emerge.”
More booms and debris reported in occupied West Bank
In the Israeli-occupied West Bank, residents say they’re increasingly confronting missile debris after it’s intercepted by Israel’s air defenses. Debris was reported Wednesday and Thursday, including in Silwad, Ramallah and Beitin as well as in Israeli settlements.
Palestinians in the West Bank lack the siren alerts and shelter infrastructure that most of Israel has relied on to limit wartime fatalities, leaving communities exposed to missiles and debris. In Beitin, Bahjat Mousa Haj said he heard a boom and later learned through social media that debris had fallen nearby Thursday morning. Nobody was killed. Emergency crews tended to the missile fragment’s husk in a nearby field.
Last week, shrapnel struck a beauty salon near Hebron, killing four women. Despite the dangers, bystanders have filmed interceptions and gathered around the fallen fragments and scorched casings, drawn by a mix of curiosity and disbelief.
Official says Iran ‘charging fees’ for safe passage through Strait
The secretary-general of the Gulf Cooperation Council says Iran is charging fees for ships to safely transit the Strait of Hormuz.
Jasem Mohamed al-Budaiwi is the first top official to accuse Iran of charging for safe passage through the strait, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which 20% of all natural gas and oil once passed.
“They closed the Strait of Hormuz and imposed fees for passing through it, which is an aggression and a violation of the United Nations agreement on the law of the sea,” al-Budaiwi said.
Al-Budaiwi oversees the GCC, a bloc of six Gulf Arab nations including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
He spoke during a news conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with the chief ministers of all states on Friday, March 27, barring those which are going to polls, and review their preparedness and plans in the wake of the West Asia conflict, sources said.
The initiative is aimed at ensuring synergy of efforts in the spirit of ‘Team India’, the sources said.
This is the first time that the prime minister will hold a meeting with the chief ministers on the West Asia conflict which started on February 28 with the attack by the US-Israel on Iran. The Persian nation has also retaliated by firing on its Gulf neighbours and Israel.
“The prime minister will interact with the CMs tomorrow evening through video conferencing on the West Asia conflict to review preparedness and plans of states. The meeting will focus on ensuring synergy of efforts in the spirit of Team India,” the sources said.
The chief ministers of election-bound states will not be part of this meeting due to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
The Cabinet Secretariat will hold a separate meeting with the chief secretaries of poll-bound Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
While making a statement in the Lok Sabha on Monday, the prime minister said that the difficult global conditions caused by the West Asia conflict are likely to persist for a long time and called upon the nation to remain prepared and united, just as it had stood together during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Modi also drew the attention of the House to the internal security dimension of the crisis, warning that certain elements attempt to exploit such situations. He said all security agencies have been placed on alert and that security across all domains, coastal, border, cyber and strategic installations is being further strengthened.
“Whether it is coastal security, border security, cyber security or strategic installations, the security of all is being reinforced,” he had said.
Urging patience, restraint and vigilance, and cautioning against those who may seek to exploit the situation by spreading falsehoods, engaging in black-marketing or hoarding, Modi appealed to all state governments to ensure strict monitoring and swift action against such elements.
Expressing his abiding faith in the collective resolve of the nation, the prime minister, in his speech in the Lok Sabha, also said that when every government and every citizen of this country walk together, “we can challenge every challenge, this is our identity, and this is our strength”.
Addressing a media event later on the same day, Modi said challenges have continued to mount one after another even after the COVID-19 pandemic and there has not been a single year that has not tested India and Indians.
“But with the united efforts of 1.4 billion Indians, India is moving forward while facing every disaster,” he said.
The PM said India is moving forward with renewed confidence and instead of postponing challenges, India confronts them head-on.

Conducting a review meeting with Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao and representatives from South Central Railway at the Assembly Committee Hall, the CM issued key directions to tackle the issue.
He asked officials to increase frequency during peak office hours and ensure strict adherence to schedules for reliable service.
He also asked to explore mini-bus services to improve access to MMTS stations located away from main roads and to provide adequate passenger amenities at all stations to enhance the commuter experience.
Officials were instructed to focus on last-mile connectivity to attract more passengers and to develop strategies to increase non-fare revenue sources and submit a detailed report.

Jerusalem: An investigation into the death of a Palestinian teenager in an Israeli prison has been closed by an Israeli judge, who said even though it’s clear the boy was starved, the cause of death is undeterminable, a newly-unsealed court decision has revealed.
The ruling provided insight into Israel’s handling of the flashpoint case of 17-year-old Walid Ahmad, which gained notoriety because he was the first Palestinian under 18 to die in Israeli detention, Palestinian officials said.
Ahmad, who was described by his family as a healthy teenager, spent six months in Israel’s Megiddo prison before he collapsed in March 2025. His autopsy did not establish a single, definitive cause of death, but said that starvation was likely the leading cause, according to the report of an Israeli doctor who observed the procedure.
In the now-unsealed ruling, published first by Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz, the Israeli judge supervising the investigation ordered the probe be halted in December despite the autopsy findings. The judge said evidence of Ahmad’s starvation did not prove the cause of death.

“The fact that he was apparently starved cannot be hidden and should not be hidden,” wrote Judge Ehud Kaplan, according to the ruling, shared with The Associated Press by Haaretz. “But I cannot determine based on the findings of the expert report that there is a causal connection between his poor physical condition and his death, and therefore I cannot determine that the death was caused by a crime.”
He added: “Given this state of affairs, the investigation into his death is exhausted.”
In Israel, judges can be requested to oversee an investigation into deaths of detainees in custody. They are able to seek and review evidence to deduce the cause of death and probe whether a death resulted from wrongdoing by any party. If evidence of wrongdoing is established, the judge can move toward criminal indictments.
Or, they can order that the investigation be stopped, as was done in Ahmad’s case.
Haaretz published the ruling after successfully filing for a gag order on the case to be lifted. Apart from the sentence, the rest of the decision remains sealed.
The case has shed light on Israel’s treatment of Palestinian detainees — particularly teens and children — in its prisons.
Ahmad was arrested at his home in the occupied West Bank town of Silwad during a pre-dawn raid in September 2024 for allegedly throwing stones at soldiers, his family said. Ahmad’s lawyer at the time, Firas al-Jabrini, said Israeli authorities denied his requests to visit his client in prison before his death. Ahmad was expecting another legal hearing when he died, according to his father, Khalid Ahmad.
Ahmad suffered from extreme malnutrition and also showed signs of inflammation of the colon and scabies, Dr. Daniel Solomon, the Israeli doctor who observed the autopsy, wrote in his report. Solomon said Ahmad likely suffered from colitis, a condition that can cause frequent diarrhea and can in some cases contribute to death.
His report also noted that Ahmad had been complaining to the prison about inadequate food for months, citing reports from the prison medical clinic.
Rights groups have documented widespread abuse, including inadequate food and water rations, in Israeli detention centres and prisons since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, 2023. Former detainees have told the AP that the conditions are dire, describing beatings, severe overcrowding, insufficient medical care, scabies outbreaks and poor sanitary conditions.
At the end of last September, Israel’s Prison Service said it was holding 350 Palestinian minors in detention or in prison on what it called “security” grounds, according to Israeli rights group B’Tselem, citing official figures. It said a further 110 Palestinian teenagers and children were also being held for being in Israel illegally.
Israel’s prison service and police did not respond to requests for comment.
The prison service says it operates according to the law and all prisoners are given basic rights.
Ahmad’s father told the AP his son’s body is still being held by Israeli authorities. The family is petitioning Israeli courts to get it back.
“What is happening in Israeli prisons is a real tragedy, as there is no value for life,” he told the AP in April 2025.

Mob violence erupted in Kokrajhar, Assam, on Wednesday, March 25, as houses belonging to Muslim families were targeted over allegations of cow slaughter.
Despite police presence, property was destroyed in the Nayasara village after suspected beef and animal remains were found in the courtyard of a resident.
Some villagers claimed it had been deliberately placed there, while others said it could have been carried from a nearby wedding.
Soon, a mob began targeting houses belonging to the Muslim community, vandalising property as they went. Videos from the incident show a group damaging homes in police presence. They were seen tearing down structures and throwing objects, causing significant damage to the homes in the village.
Police told the media the situation is now under control and several officers were deployed in the area to temper down any further escalation. Seven people, including three women, have been detained for questioning.
Both communities were urged to maintain peace while investigators determined the source of the animal remains and identified those who triggered the unrest. No causalties or injuries were reported.

Former US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he still “grapples with the decisions” he made during the Joe Biden administration to continue arming Israel even as the human suffering in Gaza increased rapidly.
Speaking at the Harvard Kennedy School on Wednesday, March 25, Blinken was grilled by students. One of them questioned how he reconciles with his Gaza legacy.
The student said Blinken had numerous opportunities to distance himself from arming Israel, but continued arming Israel, solidifying his legacy. “How do you justify to the countless Palestinians that died from your decisions? How do you reconcile with this and how do you reconcile with your legacy?”
“Of course, for me, coulda woulda shoulda, is something that will always be there when it comes to Gaza,” Blinken said. “This is something that I grappled with and will continue to grapple with for as long as I can see into the future.”
The student cited a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) conclusion that Israel effectively blocked aid to Palestinians, despite Blinken stating the opposite to Congress. The former Secretary of State, however, said the administration had to make judgments in “real time about how to try to get to a better place.”
“But let me just add a few things,” he said, before he attempted to justify his legacy as a state official who allowed Israel to continue military action in Palestine, leaving a grave aftermath with over 72,000 Palestinians killed.
Blinken said there were multiple reports with varying accounts of the situation in Gaza throughout 2024. Some claimed there was imminent famine and others said fewer people were in danger.
“The distribution even with the trucks going in was a huge problem. Looting, criminality, etc, all difficult problems that are really hard to control,” he said.
‘Trauma suffered by Israel and Palestine the same’
He proceeded to suggest to the student that the trauma suffered by Israel and Palestine was the same. “There’s no hierarchy of trauma, the trauma in Israel, the trauma among Palestinians, the same. The loss of a Palestinian life, the loss of Israeli life, the same.”
However, Israel’s trauma was such that it would have continued military action in Gaza, “irrespective of what we did,” Blinken said. Cutting off arms to Israel, although an option, “would not have changed things,” he added.
He claimed cutting off arms would instead lead to an even wider war. Blinken also questioned why there was not enough spoken about Hamas, “which was responsible for so much” of what happened in the region.
He ended the answer by saying that maybe there was something that could have been done differently. “Maybe we could have done better by the people. I wish we could have.”

Hyderabad: A Hyderabad woman’s unsettling experience with her Uber driver is currently making rounds on the internet. A message saying “I want to lick are you interested” is something that would send chills down anyone’s spine. And while some would just cancel the ride, this passenger bravely approached the police to make sure the offender faces consequences.
After she received the message on Wednesday, March 26, the woman, whose name the police refused to reveal, registered a complaint over WhatsApp to the Cyberabad SHE Teams. The police registered a case under Section 292 (public nuisance) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Gachibowli Women’s Police Station.
“After receiving the complaint last night, we nabbed the driver named Nagaraju and presented him before a court. He was let off after a fine and will be called back in two days for counselling,” Cyberabad SHE Teams Inspector Hanuman Goud told Siasat.com.

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed officials to examine the feasibility of implementing the recommendations proposed by eminent economist Karthik Muralidharan across 29 government school complexes under the Core Urban Region Economy (CURE) to address nutritional deficiencies in pre-primary and primary-level children as a pilot project.
Muralidharan met the Chief Minister at the Legislative Council Hall on the sidelines of the ongoing Assembly session, where he discussed nutritional deficiencies and learning ability gaps among children aged 0 to 10 years in the state.
He highlighted the future health complications that may arise from nutritional deficiencies during early childhood, as well as the psychological distress students may endure later in life if they do not receive proper care at the primary level.
He suggested measures that need to be taken to overcome these challenges.
Revanth Reddy informed Muralidharan that they have already been paying special attention to these specific issues. He explained that budgetary allocations have been made to provide breakfast in schools, in addition to mid-day meals.
Muralidharan also suggested that, along with the existing workers and helpers in Anganwadi centres, an additional staff member coould be appointed specifically for the purpose of providing nutritious food to the children.
Officials informed that there is a possibility of appointing an additional person, designated as “Poshan Sakhi,” to provide nutritious food to children at Anganwadis.
The Chief Minister instructed the officials to prepare a comprehensive report on the matter in collaboration with Muralidharan.

Gaza: Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers allegedly tortured a one-year-old Palestinian child in front of his father with cigarette burns to force a confession from him during interrogation.
The child, identified as Jawad Abu Nassar, and his father, Osama Abu Nassar, were picked up on March 20, near Al Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza, when armed clashes broke out.
Nasser was out to procure daily necessities and was caught in the clashes. Witnesses claimed the Israeli soldiers took the father and his child to a military checkpoint.
When civilians rushed to reach them, Israeli tanks fired at them to push them back, while ground forces forcefully took Nasser and Jawad. Their family remained in the dark about their whereabouts for hours.
It was only after the Red Cross called the IDF to collect their child 10 hours later that they were reunited with Jawad. However, the Israeli military returned Jawad alone, with no signs of Nasser.
A video on social media shows IDF soldiers carrying the child wrapped in a foil blanket returning him to a Red Cross official, stating that his vitals are “stable.”
The boy could be seen clinging to the health worker as he was carried back to the ambulance behind the border.
The soldiers reportedly extinguished cigarettes on the child’s leg, drove a nail into his leg, and inflicted injuries with sharp objects in front of his father during interrogation.
Jawad sustained severe injury marks as a result of the abuse.
Clothes bloodied upon return, hospital report claims child abuse
Jawad’s family told Al Jazeera there was blood on his clothes upon his return. When his mother checked his body for wounds, she initially thought the injuries were from fallen shrapnel.
However, when taken to the Al Aqsa Hospital, the doctors confirmed that those were “clear signs of abuse caused by cigarettes and a sharp object.”

“The wound on his leg has both an entrance and an exit, and now you can see his condition,” said Rana Abu Nassar, holding Jawad, who bore cigarette burns on various parts of his body.
The doctor’s report identified injuries on both knees from cigarette burns, along with a puncture wound likely caused by a nail, and classified it as a case of child abuse.
His father remains in Israeli detention, with the IDF known for keeping Palestinian prisoners for long periods of time without releasing them.
An American-backed ceasefire was announced on October 10, 2025. However, Israeli forces have continued violating it, killing at least 677 Palestinians and wounding 1,813 others as of March 18.

Hyderabad: The Cyber Crime Police arrested four people, including a woman from Goa, for their alleged role in a financial network that processed over Rs 26 crore through illegal online gaming and betting platforms, officials said on Thursday, March 26.
The accused were identified as Rajesh Venkata Raman, 48, a Hyderabad-based businessman, Bhamidipati Abhishek, 27, an operations manager from Hyderabad, Augustene Williams, 38, a support staff from Ernakulam in Kerala, and Manmeet Sharma alias Sonya, 40, a web designer and digital marketer from Goa.
The case came to light after a 24-year-old Hyderabad woman lodged a complaint saying she had lost nearly Rs 30 lakh after clicking on a deceptive Instagram advertisement that led her to an online casino platform called y1.game.
According to the police, the victim was first contacted over WhatsApp and lured in with bonuses and early successful withdrawals, which is a classic trust-building tactic. Convinced the platform was legitimate, she began depositing increasing sums through multiple UPI transactions from her Bank of India, State Bank of India (SBI) and Indian Bank accounts.
By the time she realised the fraud, her accounts had been frozen and lien-marked by banks flagging suspicious transactions, leaving her stripped of her savings.
Modus operandi
Behind the operation was a carefully layered financial structure designed to move money and dodge scrutiny, the police said. Rajesh Venkata Raman and one Rushabh Jasvantrai Gandhi, a Gujarat resident currently absconding, were directors of a company called One Stop Shopping Station Private Limited.
The company ran payment gateways under the names CloseX Pay, Trustly Pay and Accult Pay, processing transactions through IMPS, UPI and credit and debit cards, while charging a commission of two to three per cent per transaction.
Rajesh hired Abhishek and Williams to operate the payment gateway transactions. Meanwhile, a Delhi-based accused identified as Andy alias Shaheer opened mule accounts in the names of fictitious companies and passed the know your customer (KYC) details to Sonya, who then forwarded them to Abhishek.
Abhishek, in turn, sent the documents to officials at Suryodaya Bank in Ahmedabad, who allegedly provided payment gateway services in exchange for a 0.75 per cent cut.
Betting deposits flowed into the payment gateway controlled by Rajesh, who collected both his own 5 per cent commission and Sonya’s 5 per cent share before transferring the remaining funds to Andy’s account. In total, the network is alleged to have processed Rs 26,07,01,460 through betting websites.
Police said efforts are underway to trace the money trail and nab the two absconding accused, Andy alias Shaheer and Rushabh Jasvantrai Gandhi.
Laptops, mobile phones seized
The police team recovered four laptops, six mobile phones, nine chequebooks, two shell company stamps and cash of Rs 6.5 lakh from the accused.
Police have advised the public to be wary of online lottery and gaming advertisements on social media that promise easy or guaranteed returns. Online gaming and betting is prohibited under the Telangana Gaming Act, and playing, promoting or organising such activities is unlawful, they said.

For most people, including Hyderabadis, the word ‘backwaters’ immediately takes you to Kerala’s palm-fringed canals and the steady hum of a houseboat drifting through Alleppey.
But what if we told you that a nearly identical paradise exists just an overnight train ride away from Hyderabad? Tucked away in the lush Konaseema delta of Andhra Pradesh lies Dindi, a serene village where the Godavari River slows down to create a web of emerald-green lagoons.
For those who want to experience Kerala without going too far from the city or live in a floating suite to watch the sunset over the river, Dindi is the perfect place that offers a slice of the ‘slow life’ that is as authentic as possible.
The houseboat experience in Dindi
For decades, the houseboat experience in India was synonymous with a flight to Kochi or a long trek to Srinagar. It is a little-known fact that the Konaseema delta is one of the few places in the entire country, and the only one in the Telugu states, where this specific form of “water-living” has been successfully replicated.
Unlike the backwaters of Alleppey, Dindi remains largely undiscovered. So, here you will not get stuck in the watery traffic jam, and instead will get the entire river to yourself. Furthermore, the Godavari is significantly wider than the canals of Kerala, giving a sense of oceanic vastness.
To experience this firsthand, the primary option is the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation jetty located at the Haritha Coconut Country Resort. This is the official hub for the region’s houseboat industry, where the government-run fleet and several private operators are docked. Travellers can choose between a 12-hour day cruise or a full 24-hour overnight stay, with most boats featuring two air-conditioned bedrooms and an open upper deck. For those seeking a more curated or luxury-leaning journey, premium resorts in the vicinity, such as Sterling Palavelli Godavari and RVR Sarovar Portico, also offer private houseboat excursions.
Other things to do in Dindi
Also known as God’s Own Village, Dindi serves as the perfect base to explore the wider Konaseema region. Some things to do here include:
– Antharvedi Sagara Sangamam: A 20 km drive leads to the stunning confluence where the Vashista Godavari meets the Bay of Bengal.
– The Lighthouse: Climb the 19th-century Antharvedi Lighthouse for a panoramic view of the river merging into the sea.
– Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple: Visit this historic 15th-century temple, a major spiritual landmark in the delta.
– Peruru Heritage Village: Walk through a “living museum” of 100-year-old traditional mansions and ancient layout.
– Adurru Buddhist Site: Explore the ruins of a 2,400-year-old Mahastupa dating back to the Ashokan era.
– Adventure Sports: Many riverside resorts now offer kayaking, zip-lining, and zorbing for those seeking an adrenaline fix.
How to reach from Hyderabad?
For those who enjoy a long drive, Dindi is approximately 450 km from Hyderabad. The journey takes roughly 8 to 9 hours via the Suryapet and Vijayawada route. The roads are well-maintained, and the stretch through the Konaseema coconut groves is particularly scenic.
Currently, it is the best time to visit, as the weather is pleasant and the humidity is low, making it perfect for afternoon houseboat cruises. The monsoon (July to September) is also a beautiful time to visit, as the delta turns a vivid emerald green, though heavy rains can occasionally delay boat departures.

In what military analysts are calling an unprecedented operational challenge for the Pentagon, thousands of American troops have been forced to abandon their bases across West Asia and relocate to hotels and office spaces, conducting an active war, in effect, from remote and improvised worksites.
The displacement is a direct consequence of sustained Iranian missile and drone strikes on US military installations throughout the region, according to military personnel and officials who told the New York Times (NYT).
The US had close to 40,000 troops stationed across the region when hostilities began. Central Command has since dispersed thousands of them, some as far as Europe, though a significant number remain in West Asia, operating from what one official described as “alternative” sites.
Bases rendered uninhabitable
The scale of damage to US facilities has been significant. In Kuwait, which shares a border with Iran, six service members were killed in a strike on Port Shuaiba that destroyed an army tactical operations centre. Ali Al Salem Air Base and Camp Buehring both sustained damage to aircraft, maintenance facilities and fuel infrastructure.
In Qatar, Iran struck Al Udeid Air Base, the regional air headquarters of US Central Command, damaging an early-warning radar system. In Bahrain, a drone hit communications equipment at the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet.
At Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, Iranian missiles and drones damaged communications equipment and several refuelling tankers. One service member was killed and several others were wounded. The NYT also reported that command centres at that base had no reinforced roofs.
Iran has also largely shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route, ensuring the war’s economic consequences extend well beyond the immediate theatre.
‘Absolutely going to lose capability’
“We have the ability to set up expedient operation centres, but you’re absolutely going to lose capability,” Master Sergeant Wes J Bryant, a retired US Air Force Special Operations targeting specialist, told the NYT, elaborating on what the dispersal means for operations on the ground.
“You can’t just put all that equipment on the top of a hotel, for example. Some of it is unwieldy,” he added.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) has meanwhile urged civilians in the region to report the new locations of American troops via Telegram, calling it an “Islamic duty.” Iranian officials have accused Washington of using civilians as human shields by sheltering soldiers in hotels, which the US military denies.
Questions of preparation
The situation has renewed scrutiny of the Trump administration’s pre-war planning. The NYT reported that US embassies were not reduced in staffing before hostilities began, non-essential government employees were not evacuated and Americans in the region were not warned to leave until after the war started.
Two American KC-135 refuelling tankers also collided this month, killing six service members, an incident that is now under investigation. The tankers, officials said, were rushed to the war with little time to orient or practice in the region beforehand.
Two decades of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, where US air superiority was established quickly, had led the military to build up large, fixed installations close to what are now active front lines. Those facilities were designed for a different threat environment than Iran’s ballistic missile capability represents.
General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had previously acknowledged that Iran “still retains some capability” despite extensive US strikes. However, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth claimed that the US has struck over 7,000 targets across Iran and its military infrastructure since the war began.

Hyderabad: Around 1,500 policemen will be deployed for the Sri Ramnavami Shobha Yatra to be taken out from Sitarambagh temple at Asifnagar to Hanuman Vyamshala, Sultan Bazaar on Friday, March 27.
The police force will be drafted from the City Armed Reserve, City Rapid Action Force, City Security Guards, Rapid Action Force, Task Force, and mounted police teams.
Additional policemen have been deployed at several sensitive locations to prevent any trouble. Any mosques, chillas and dargas, on the procession are covered with cloth by the administration.
Commissioner of Police, VC Sajjanar and Joint Commissioner of Police, Tafseeq Iqbal, had conducted a route inspection two days ago and directed officials to make necessary arrangements.
The main procession will be taken out by the Sri Ramnavami Utsav Committee and a tributary procession will be taken out by MLA Raja Singh from Akashpuri Hanuman temple and will join the main procession on Mangalhat Road.
Around 2 lakh people are expected to participate in the procession that will cover a distance of around seven kilometres.
The highlight of the procession will be the folk dancers and martial art performers who will be coming from across the country.
Raja Singh receives death threats
Earlier this month, that is on March 17, Raja Singh had written to Hyderabad Police Commissioner, VC Sajjanar, refusing police protection for the procession saying officers who do not wear Tilak “spoil the atmosphere of the Shobha Yatra”.
He had also alleged that devotees were often lathi-charged by the police, leading to a violent atmosphere in an otherwise peaceful procession.
However, later on the same day, at a Ram Navami volunteer meeting organized at Akashpuri Hanuman Temple in Dhoolpet, Raja Singh claimed that he had received a letter threatening to kill him during the Shobha Yatra.
“The snipers will come to target me. The terrorists will place bombs at two places during the Shobha Yatra. I didn’t inform the police as I am aware the police would not take it seriously,” he had said.
Then on March 22, Raja Singh wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah claiming that he has been receiving death threats repeatedly through phone calls and letters sent to his residence and appealed to the minister to provide security cover for himself and his family.
He said that despite filing multiple complaints with the police, no action has been taken so far and if any harm were to come to his family, he would be forced to take the matter into his own hands.
“If any harm comes to my family or any member of my family because of these people, I will not go to the police again. I will pick up the weapon myself and destroy those responsible. Whatever happens after that will be on the heads of those who ignored my complaints.” he stated in the letter.

Nabatieh: Emergency health workers in Lebanon’s Nabatieh city are reportedly delaying their rescue efforts in areas getting bombed to avoid being targeted in Israel’s “double-tap” strikes.
Several paramedic vehicles were seen waiting to start towards the emergency scene in a video posted by Sky News foreign correspondent Alex Crawford, who said it has now become a pattern for Israel to use the method of “double-tap” strikes.
A double-tap strike is when two strikes are carried out on the same target in the span of minutes, which often injures or kills the paramedics and civilians coming to aid the victims.
At least 42 paramedics have been killed by Israeli strikes, Lebanon’s health ministry stated, with many suffering from injuries, since March 2, as the country was pulled into the US-Israel-Iran war.
On Tuesday, on March 24, Ali Jaber and Joud Sleiman, two paramedics who set out on a motorcycle on a rescue mission, were hit by a strike, Reuters reported. Both were wearing emergency worker uniforms, and their vehicle was properly marked as an ambulance with flashing lights, the ministry said.
“A paramedic who doesn’t even have a knife, going to save someone else – they strike him and kill him. This has happened in more than one strike, more than one place,” said Ali’s father, Hassan Jaber.
Joud’s father Mohammed Sleiman, also Nabatieh’s chief paramedic, accused Israel of killing his son. He said that the nation “insists on damaging, on killing, on oppressing, on terrorising – and we insist on staying.”
Minab girls’ school attack, killing of Hind Rajab were double-tap strikes
There have been multiple accounts of Israel’s double-tap strikes, including the one that hit a girls’ school in Menab, Iran.
According to a Red Crescent worker, the principal and teachers moved a group of students to the prayer hall after the first bomb hit the school. The parents were immediately called, but the second bomb hit the area where they were taking shelter before the parents arrived.
At the time of the attack, there were 170 girls in the school, and 165 of the girls killed were between the ages of seven and 12.

One of the parents told the media that her daughter was among the group shifted to the prayer hall, but the second strike hit before he arrived at the school.
“My little girl was completely burned,” he said. “There was nothing left of her. We could only identify her from her school bag, which she was still holding. She was completely burned.”
The killing of six-year-old Hind Rajab in Gaza City was also reportedly a double-tap strike.

The six-year-old was killed in a strike on January 29, 2024, and the Red Crescent ambulance carrying two paramedics, with marked vehicles and sirens blaring, was also targeted by an Israeli tank fire.
There were a total of 12 casualties on the day as Hind was trapped in a car surrounded by the bodies of six family members.

A global campaign group, Avaaz, in their report, found clear proof that the killings of Hind and the emergency workers were grave violations of international combat law under the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute.
“By reconstructing the coordination and timing around the approved ambulance mission, it shows that there is substantial evidence of a deliberate ‘double-tap’ tactic – an initial military strike followed with a deliberately timed second strike targeting emergency responders and medical personnel who arrive to help,” the report shared by Al Jazeera said.

Hyderabad: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to probe the Moinabad farmhouse drugs case has completed questioning three suspects including former BRS MLA Pilot Rohith Reddy, his brother Rakesh Reddy and businessman Namith Sharma.
The court had granted police three day custody of the suspects from 4:30 pm on Monday, March 23, to 4:30 pm on Thursday, March 26.
The police questioned the trio separately about the sources of drugs and the circumstances under which they had fired upon the police.
Moinabad farmhouse drug bust
On March 14, EAGLE (Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement) team had conducted a raid at Rohith Reddy’s farmhouse in Moinabad and caught 11 persons including Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MP from Andhra Pradesh, Putta Mahesh Kumar, one advocate, six real estate businessmen and a woman.
While five of them tested positive for drugs during the on-site urine test, the other six tested positive the next morning through a blood sample.
Two grams of cocaine and liquor bottles were also seized during the raid. Namith Sharma had also fired a gun at the farmhouse, but no injury was reported.
Following the raid, both Rohith Reddy and Mahesh Kumar received notices from their respective political parties seeking an explanation. The notices also direct them to stay away from party activities until further clarification is provided.
Mahesh Kumar was given a police bail on March 15, in view of the Parliament session.
On Thursday, after their police custody ended, the three suspects were taken to the local government hospital for a medical examination and later sent to the Chanchalguda Central Prison.

Mahmudabad Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) B K Singh told reporters on Thursday that the family has sought compensation and a job.
“We are looking into the matter. The district administration is assisting the family with legal procedures as they await a response to their request for financial aid and government assistance,” Singh said.

New Delhi: The Railways has terminated the contract of a vendor after a passenger found worms in a packaged curd served to him on the Patna-Tatanagar Vande Bharat Express and imposed a fine of Rs 50 lakh on the company.
The Railway Ministry has also imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on its own company, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), for not handling the matter properly.
On March 15, a group of seven passengers on board the Vande Bharat train were served packaged curd of a known brand along with dinner. Upon opening one of the packets, they found live worms and insects inside. The passenger, Ritesh Singh, immediately flagged the issue on his X handle, tagging the IRCTC, the Railway Minister and others.
In its incident-cum-action taken report, IRCTC found that the curd packet was picked up from Patna, with a manufacturing date of March 9, 2026 and an expiry date of April 7, 2026.
The report stated that the officials apologised to the passengers and served them dry fruit mixtures and some sweet treats.
“We tried to explain the situation to them in every possible manner and requested them to verify the matter at the spot. However, they refused to delete the tweet and expressed their intention that the video should go viral and trend,” the report said.
According to the report, the vendor, Krishna Enterprises, was fined Rs 25,000 and warned for negligence in food handling. The firm was also instructed to maintain a proper cold chain, be more vigilant and adhere to food safety protocols.
Dissatisfied with the IRCTC’s action, the Railway Ministry on Wednesday directed it to terminate the contract of Krishna Enterprises and enhance the fine from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50 lakh.
The ministry has also imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on IRCTC.
“Considering the gravity of the lapses, the competent authority has decided to impose a fine of Rs 10 lakh on IRCTC for such deficiency in services. Further, IRCTC is advised to ensure strict monitoring of onboard services so as to prevent any such incident in future,” the Ministry said in its order.
“All concerned IRCTC supervisors must be directed to ensure that food quality, food safety and hygiene are their prime concerns,” it added.
The ministry also posted the matter on its X handle, stating, “The complaint regarding food quality raised by a passenger in train number 21896 (Patna-Tatanagar Vande Bharat Express) on 15 March, 2026 has been taken seriously.”
“Action taken – IRCTC has been penalised Rs 10 lakh, the service provider has been penalised with Rs 50 lakh, and has been ordered to terminate the contract. Passenger safety and quality remain our top priority,” the post read.

Mumbai: Several Bollywood legends, including Shah Rukh Khan and Dilip Kumar, have roots tracing back to present-day Pakistan. Now, a similar connection linked to Dhurandhar star Ranveer Singh is drawing fresh attention and it’s largely due to the massive success of his latest film.
As Dhurandhar: The Revenge continues its record-breaking run at the box office, the spotlight on Ranveer Singh has intensified. Amid this renewed focus, fans have begun revisiting lesser-known details about his family background, especially his paternal grandmother, Chand Burke.
About Ranveer Singh’s Dadi Chand Burke
Chand Burke, often referred to as the “Dancing Lily of Punjab,” was a celebrated actress in pre-Partition Lahore, which is now in Pakistan. Born in 1932 in the Punjab Province of British India, she built a successful career in the 1940s Lahore film industry, starring in several Punjabi films and earning widespread popularity for her acting and dancing skills.
Her life took a major turn during the Partition of India, when she moved to Mumbai. Though her career faced setbacks initially, she later made a comeback after being cast by Raj Kapoor in Boot Polish (1954). She went on to appear in multiple Hindi films before eventually stepping away from the spotlight.
Chand Burke later married businessman Sundar Singh Bhavnani, and their son Jagjit Bhavnani is Ranveer Singh’s father making her legacy directly connected to one of today’s biggest Bollywood stars.
This connection has become relevant now as Dhurandhar 2 continues its phenomenal box office run, prompting fans to explore Ranveer’s roots and cinematic lineage. With his grandmother being a prominent figure in pre-Partition cinema, many are seeing Ranveer’s success as part of a larger legacy that spans generations and borders.
Meanwhile, Dhurandhar 2 features an ensemble cast including Arjun Rampal, Rakesh Bedi, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, Sara Arjun, Danish Pandor, Gaurav Gera, and Danish Iqbal, with a special cameo by Yami Gautam. Like its predecessor, the film is witnessing a strong theatrical run, further cementing its place as one of the biggest hits in recent times. It has crossed Rs 1000 crores already.

Rayavaram: At least 13 people were killed and 28 others were injured after a private bus collided with a tipper lorry and burst into flames in Markapuram district on Thursday, March 26, the police said.
The accident occurred between 5:30 am and 6 am near Rayavaram village on the road leading to Podili when the bus rammed into the concrete chips-laden dumper truck, colliding with its fuel tank, which sparked a massive inferno.
Markapuram Superintendent of Police (SP) V Harshavardhan Raju initially said 14 people died in the accident and 23 were left injured, but the toll was later revised to 13 fatalities with 28 people getting injured, including the driver, who were shifted to a hospital for treatment.
“There were 41 people in the bus at the time of the accident and all the 13 deceased persons were burnt to death,” Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha said.
According to her, the bus belonged to Harikrishna Travels and its owner hails from Kanigiri. She said the bus possessed license and insurance till December 2026.
The private travel bus was heading to Kaligiri in Nellore district from Jagityal in Telangana.
The truck driver also sustained injuries in the accident and has been hospitalised.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief over the loss of lives. “I have spoken with ministers and senior officials regarding the incident. I have instructed that better medical care be provided to the injured. I have advised that if necessary, three individuals in critical condition be transferred to another hospital for improved treatment,” he said in a post on X.
“I express my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. The government will support the affected families,” he added.
The CM spoke to officials to ensure that the injured were receiving adequate medical assistance.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy also expressed deep sorrow over the death of passengers. He directed officials to take steps to ensure that those injured in the accident receive proper medical treatment.
“In line with the Chief Minister’s directives, state Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao has spoken with the Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary,” his office said in a statement.
Two from Telangana killed in acident
Among the 13 victims, two are from Telangana’s Jagtial. According to reports, eight passengers had boarded the bus from the district and two of them died after the bus collided with the tipper.
The two victims were identified as Uppu Rama Devi, 45, from Ramaraopalli and Venkatesh from Ayodhya of Raikal mandal, both natives of Andhra Pradesh. They had migrated to the district to work as construction labourers.
Ramadevi and her son Manohar were travelling to their native village when the bus caught fire. Ramadevi pushed her son out of the vehicle but could not escape herself.
The bus belonging to Harikrishna Travels commenced its journey from Nirmal on Wednesday afternoon, March 25, and picked up eight passengers in Jagtial district in the evening.
Man uses sickle to save passengers
Following the accident, a resident of Rayavaram rushed to help the passengers. However, the door of the bus was jammed. He used a sickle to open the door and pulled eight passengers to safety.
According to reports, the man couldn’t save other passengers due to thick smoke in the bus.
Dialled 100 several times
While receiving treatment at a hospital, a passenger narrated her ordeal to Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLA Kandula Narayana. “I dialled 100 several times but couldn’t reach anyone,” the passenger said, adding that she also called the 108 emergency service 20 times and only then did they respond. However, the bus was gutted by then.
Survivors recount horror
The survivors recounted the horror of the early morning tragedy.
Several completely burnt bodies lay on the road before being shifted to ambulances for further formalities. The rib cage of one body was also visible, indicating the severity of the blaze.
A male passenger, who was checking his phone at the time of the accident, said most people were asleep.
“I was checking my phone. I was seated in the middle. I opened the emergency door and helped a woman out,” he said, recalling his escape.
President, PM express condolence
President Droupadi Murmu condoled the loss of lives in the accident and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ex-gratia to the families of the victims.
“Deeply saddened to learn about the tragic bus accident in Markapuram district, Andhra Pradesh. I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. My thoughts and prayers are with them. I wish a speedy recovery to those injured,” Murmu said on X.
PM Modi condoled the deaths and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF to the next of kin of each deceased.

The adulterated products were sold to wholesale and retail customers under false claims of being good-quality ice creams, resulting in illegal profits.
“The storage conditions at the premises were found to be highly unsanitary,” the authorities said. “There was improper handling and storage of both raw materials and finished products in unsafe and unclean environments, rendering the products unfit for human consumption.”
The officials seized ice cream products worth Rs 1,75,000. Both the accused and the seized material were handed over to the Musheerabad police for further action.
The case was registered under Sections 125 (endangering human life or the personal safety), 318(4) (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Thursday, March 26, said the completion of multispecialty hospitals in Warangal and the state capital will add 10,000 beds to the state public health system.
These hospitals will be constructed at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Sanathnagar, Alwal, LB Nagar, and Warangal Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS).
Speaking during the Question Hour in the assembly, Reddy also said the health department is developing a website where non-resident Telangana doctors can register to volunteer their services to hospitals in the state during their visit home.
“A new Osmania hospital is being constructed in Goshamahal (in Hyderabad) on 30 acres with a cost of Rs 3,000 crores. Work on Telangana Institutes of Medical Sciences (TIMS) hospitals is being accelerated. So additionally, 10,000 beds will be made available for patients. We are correcting the mistakes made in the past (during the BRS regime),” the CM told the House.
Taking on the BRS party, Reddy said the previous regime left Aarogyasri scheme dues to the extent of Rs 627 crore, and while bearing the burden, the Congress government doubled the insurance coverage from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.
He also said that between 2014 and December 6, 2023, the average monthly spending under Aarogyasri was Rs 52 crore whereas from December 7, 2023, to March 25, 2026, it increased significantly to Rs 89 crore per month.
He said after the Congress came to power in December 2023, Rs 2,046 crore had been disbursed under the CM Relief Fund, while Rs 2,400 crore had been spent on the Aarogyasri Scheme.
“In total, about Rs 4500 crore has been spent by our government for the healthcare of the poor.”
He highlighted that there were many irregularities in the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund cheque distribution earlier, and cases were registered against the perpetrators.

Muslim students travelling from Hyderabad to write the Darul Uloom Deoband examinations were allegedly targeted based on their identity by a saffron-clad priest, who threatened to kill them if the students slaughtered cows.
Darul Uloom Deoband is an institution in Uttar Pradesh focused on Islamic culture and sciences.
One of the students who was targeted shared a video that surfaced on social media on March 26, recounting the incident.
“We were going for the Darul Uloom Deoband examinations from Hyderabad we reached Delhi. While we were standing at the Delhi station, this miscreant approached us and threatened us,” he said.
In the video, the group of students can be seen standing on the platform, silent as the man issued the threats.
“Ay, gai ka hatya karo mat, ay gai ka hatya karo mat. Naito tera hatya karenge (Don’t kill a cow, don’t kill a cow. Or else I will kill you),” the priest said.
The student described the incident as a blatant provocation which could lead to their imprisonment as they were visibly Muslim, with beards and skullcaps.
He urged other students travelling from other states for the examination to stay safe and remain calm if miscreants attempt to confront them.
“They (miscreants) want you to get angry and fight back,” he said and appealed to them to walk away instead of engaging.

Bangkok: Nuclear power is getting a second look in Southeast Asia as countries prepare to meet surging energy demand as they vie for artificial intelligence-focused data centres.
Several Southeast Asian nations are reviving mothballed nuclear plans and setting ambitious targets and nearly half of the region could, if they pursue those goals, have nuclear energy in the 2030s. Even countries without current plans have signaled their interest.
Southeast Asia has never produced a single watt of nuclear energy, despite long-held atomic ambitions. But that may soon change as pressure mounts to reduce emissions that contribute to climate change, while meeting growing power needs.
The Iran war is underscoring the vulnerability of Asia’s energy supplies, raising the sense of urgency about finding alternatives to oil and gas in Southeast Asia, analysts say.
The surge in crude oil prices caused by the escalating conflict has raised the motivation for countries to speed up their nuclear efforts, said Alvie Asuncion-Astronomo of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute.
Vietnam and Russia advanced a nuclear power deal this week as the region’s energy security concerns worsened. In South Asia, Bangladesh is racing to power up its new nuclear power plant, also backed by Russia, to address the country’s energy shortfalls.
Southeast Asia will account for a quarter of growth in global energy demand by 2035, according to the International Energy Agency, or IEA. That partly is because of the more than 2,000 data centres in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines, according to the think tank Ember.
Many more data centers are in the pipeline.
That’s most obvious in Malaysia, which aspires to be Southeast Asia’s AI computing hub and has drawn investments and interest from tech giants like Microsoft, Google and Nvidia.
The revival of Southeast Asia’s nuclear interest mirrors a global trend.
Nearly 40 nations — including the United States, Japan, South Korea and China — have joined a global push to triple installed nuclear energy capacity by 2050. Southeast Asia will account for nearly a fourth of the 157 gigawatts expected from “newcomer nuclear nations” by mid-century, according to the industry-backed World Nuclear Association.
“There is a more serious, new and growing momentum for the development of nuclear energy in Southeast Asia,” said King Lee, with the association.
Southeast Asia revisits nuclear power
Five of the 11 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations — Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines — are chasing nuclear.
Vietnam is building two nuclear plants, backed by the Russian state corporation Rosatom. These are “nationally significant, strategic projects”, according to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. Vietnam’s revised atomic energy law took effect in January.
Indonesia added nuclear to its new energy plan last year, aiming to build two small modular reactors by 2034. Officials there say Canada and Russia have issued formal cooperation proposals and others will soon follow.
Thailand set a target last year of adding 600 megawatts of nuclear generating capacity by 2037. Nuclear is a “promising solution” to supplying enough affordable, clean electricity to meet rising demand, officials with Thailand’s Electricity Generating Authority told a conference in Bangkok.
No Southeast Asian nation has engaged with atomic energy more than the Philippines, which built a nuclear power plant in the 1970s that it never turned on.
A new atomic energy regulatory authority launched last year will “usher in the integration of nuclear power”, according to Philippine officials. The country set a 2032 target and approved a roadmap for potential investors in February.
“We are not anticipating that nuclear electricity will be cheap at the onset,” said Asuncion-Astronomo. But in the long term, she said it will improve the Philippines’ energy reliability, security, independence and eventually costs.
“The ongoing conflict in the Middle East definitely demonstrates how volatile fossil fuel costs are and the instability of the supply,” she said. “Nuclear is an alternative solution that can give us more self-reliance in terms of energy.”
Southeast Asian nations without firm plans are also showing interest.
Cambodia’s latest national strategy signalled an openness to nuclear and Singapore outlined plans last year to study its own atomic potential.
Even the tiny oil and gas sultanate of Brunei told the International Atomic Energy Agency, or IAEA, that it is “carefully exploring nuclear energy”.
Data centres revive Malaysia’s nuclear plans
The AI-focused data centres contributing to Southeast Asia’s growing energy demand are large windowless buildings filled with rows of computers.
A standard AI data centre consumes as much electricity as 100,000 households, the IEA says.
Malaysia has more than 500 operational data centres. Another 300 or so are under construction and around 1,140 are planned, according to Ember.
Malaysia revived its nuclear program last year and set a 2031 target for bringing atomic energy online.
“A lot more industries are expanding in Malaysia,” said Zayana Zaikariah, with the Kuala Lumpur-based Institute of Strategic and International Studies, listing growing interest in data centres, semiconductors and mining. “Everything requires energy.”
The US is helping.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed an agreement with Malaysia last year. He called it “a signal to the world of how civil nuclear cooperation is something that is available”.
President Donald Trump also sees nuclear as a way to meet data centre demands. In 2025, he ordered the quadrupling of US nuclear power within the next 25 years.
“There’s more incentive to follow through compared to previous flirtations with nuclear energy,” said Amalina Anuar, with the ISEAS-Yusof Institute, a Singapore-based think tank. The fact that Malaysia’s oil and gas reserves are finite is driving a search for new energy sources.
Fossil fuels generate 81 per cent of Malaysia’s electricity, Ember found, while solar and wind provide just 2 per cent.
“Malaysia’s decarbonization is both urgent and critical as rising demand from AI and data centres is anticipated,” said Dinita Setyawati with Ember. “But the nuclear option should be approached cautiously.”
Nuclear power risks remain
Global nuclear capacity will more than triple — to about 1,446 gigawatts — by 2050 if existing reactors continue operations and governments meet their stated targets, according to the World Nuclear Association.
More than 400 nuclear reactors, in about 30 countries, generate around 380 gigawatts of energy, according to the IAEA’s Power Reactor Information System. This is makes up between 4.5 pr cent to 10 per cent of the world’s energy, the IEA and nuclear association estimate.
Concerns over nuclear safety, waste and supply remain. Public resistance flared after the cataclysmic 1986 Chernobyl and 2011 Fukushima nuclear meltdowns. But even Japan, which idled all its plants after that disaster, is restarting its nuclear plants.
Bridget Woodman, with the research group Zero Carbon Analytics, said that as the world strays farther off track from its climate goals, nuclear can look deceptively more enticing than other less risky alternatives, like renewable energy.
Southeast Asian countries “considering starting a nuclear industry from scratch” need to consider “the possibility of accidents”, she said.

Chennai: With a month to go for Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, the battle lines are clearly drawn and the AIADMK camp is making apparent efforts to get a headstart ahead of the ruling DMK bloc by quickly finalising the seat-sharing deal, identifying constituencies for itself and allies and switching on to the campaign mode.
The Edappadi K Palaniswami-led AIADMK, which leads the NDA in Tamil Nadu will take on the DMK in certain urban centres considered to be the ruling party’s stronghold.
The assembly polls will be held on April 23 and counting of votes taken up on May 4.
Determined to win over 210 out of the 234 Assembly constituencies in the state, the AIADMK has announced that it would contest from 169 seats, leaving the rest to allies, while the DMK has readied its poll battle machinery in as many as 175 constituencies. For its part, the Stalin-led party has set a target to secure over 200 seats.
DMK has announced that ‘Rising Sun’ will be in fray from 175 Assembly segments, indicating it would include smaller allies that would face the polls under the ruling party’s poll symbol.
The AIADMK would take on the DMK in about 13 out of the 16 constituencies in Chennai, which has been electing Chief Minister M K Stalin, his son and deputy CM Udhayanidhi, Health Minister Ma Subramanian and Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister P K Sekar Babu, to name the very prominent persons in the DMK.
The AIADMK has allotted three seats to its allies while retaining 13 in the city. It has also announced its first list of candidates, with Palaniswami testing his electoral fortunes once again from Edappadi in Salem district, while a number of former ministers and sitting and ex-MLAs are also in fray.
While Seeman-led Naam Tamilar Katchi is in the fray in all the constituencies, actor-politician Vijay is gearing up to announce his TVK party candidates for 234 seats in the high-stakes poll battle.
Vijay, a top cinema star with a huge fan following, is likely to hit the campaign trail this week. Only these two leaders with a film background would take on the Dravidian majors that are backed with numerous political parties, respectively, in the election.
The AIADMK-led NDA has the BJP, which will contest from 27 seats. PMK will fight from 18 seats, AMMK from 11, TMC (M) from five (on BJP’s Lotus symbol). Besides, Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi will filed candidates from two seats, while Tamizhaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam and Puratchi Bharatham, have been allotted one seat each. In all, AIADMK has apportioned 65 seats to its allies.
The Dravidian party has retained a lion’s share of seats, accounting for 169.
Palaniswami finalised the seat-sharing pact with seven political parties in two days, starting from March 23. On March 25, he announced the constituencies from where the constituents would contest and launched the campaign for the NDA from Mylapore in Chennai, where the BJP is contesting.
In the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, the Congress will enter the poll fray from 28 seats, DMDK: 10, VCK: 8, left parties: 5 each, and MDMK: 4, one seat each to SDPI, Mukkulathor Puli Padai Katchi (both parties contesting in Rising Sun symbol) and Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi. The party has allotted 2 seats each to IUML, Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi (KMDK) and the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK).
KMDK and MMK are set to contest polls under the DMK’s symbol. The MDMK will contest in the ‘Rising Sun’ symbol in 3 out of the 4 seats it has been given by the DMK.
The campaign is likely to intensify from next week, when the filing of nomination papers will formally commence from March 30.

Raipur: The Chhattisgarh government has capped the supply of commercial LPG cylinders at 20 per cent of the previous month’s consumption, while directing time-bound online refill booking for domestic consumers, officials said on Thursday, March 26.
Based on available stock, priority categories for LPG supply have been identified. These include educational institutions, hospitals, military and paramilitary camps, jails, hotels, social welfare institutions, railway and airport canteens, government offices, guest houses, animal feed units, and restaurants, an official statement said.
The decision was taken on Wednesday during a review meeting of regional managers of oil companies, chaired by the state’s food department secretary, Reena Baba Saheb Kangale, to assess LPG availability and streamline the distribution system in the state amid supply concerns following the West Asia conflict.
It was decided in the meeting that commercial LPG consumers, including institutions and establishments, will now receive a maximum of 20 per cent of their total consumption from the previous month, the statement said.
To ensure timely access for domestic users, the government has directed that online LPG refill booking facilities be made available within 25 days in urban areas and within 45 days in rural areas, it said.
The meeting focused on ensuring equitable distribution of LPG based on availability, with priority to essential consumer institutions.
District administrations have been instructed to ensure security arrangements at LPG distributor offices and warehouses with the help of police and home guards to prevent overcrowding and disorder. Distributors have also been directed to keep their telephone lines active and address consumer complaints promptly, the release said.
It was also decided that oil companies will conduct daily reviews of commercial LPG stock and distribution, and regularly share updates with the department.
Senior officials from the Food and Civil Supplies Department and representatives of Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation attended the meeting.

Tokyo: Japan began releasing 30 days’ worth of oil from state reserves on Thursday, March 26, to cushion the impact of the West Asia conflict on its economy, as concerns over supply mount and oil prices soar, local media reported.
The move came after the country started drawing down 15 days’ worth of oil from private-sector stockpiles last Monday, reports Xinhua news agency
The government plans to sell a total of about 8.5 million kiloliters of oil from 11 storage bases across the country, according to Kyodo News.
Japan will also begin to tap joint oil reserves held in the country by three Middle Eastern nations, including the United Arab Emirates, with five days’ worth to be released by next Tuesday for supply to oil wholesalers.
Japan relies on the Middle East for more than 90 per cent of its crude oil imports, leaving it highly vulnerable to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz following the outbreak of the Middle East conflict in late February. The disruption has driven sharp rises in both crude oil and retail gasoline prices in the country.
In addition to tapping oil reserves, the Japanese government also resumed gasoline subsidies to cap fuel costs for consumers. The measure has brought the average retail price for regular gasoline down to 177.7 yen (about 1.11 US dollars) per litre from a record high of 190.8 yen last week, according to Kyodo News.
As of the end of 2025, Japan held an oil reserve equivalent to 254 days of domestic demand.
The impact of the tensions in West Asia is being seen in several nations.
Meanwhile, in the Philippines, President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos on Wednesday signed a law allowing the government to temporarily suspend or cut fuel excise taxes on petroleum when global oil prices reach a set threshold.
Republic Act No. 12316 authorises the president, upon the recommendation of the Development Budget Coordination Committee and in coordination with the Secretary of the Department of Energy, to act when the average price of Dubai crude oil reaches or exceeds 80 U.S. dollars per barrel for one month.
Under the law, any suspension or reduction of fuel excise taxes may be implemented for up to three months at a time, but not exceeding a total of one year.
The tax rates will automatically revert to their original levels either one week after the one-month average Dubai crude price falls below 80 US dollars per barrel, or after three months have elapsed, whichever comes first.
The measure is designed to give the government a flexible tool to cushion the impact of rising fuel costs on consumers and the broader economy.
The act will take effect in 15 days, and the authority granted to the president under the measure will remain in effect until December 31, 2028.

New Delhi: Nayara Energy on Thursday, March 26, increased petrol and diesel prices, becoming one of the first fuel retailers in India to pass on the recent rise in global crude oil prices to consumers.
The company has raised petrol prices by Rs 5 per litre and diesel by Rs 3 per litre, according to sources.
The actual increase may vary slightly across states due to differences in local taxes such as VAT. In some regions, petrol prices have gone up by as much as Rs 5.30 per litre.
The move comes at a time when global oil prices have surged sharply following tensions in the Middle East.
Prices had jumped nearly 50 per cent since late February, after Israel carried out military strikes on Iran, leading to retaliation and fears of supply disruptions.
International crude prices recently touched around $119 per barrel before easing to about $100.
Despite this surge, state-owned oil marketing companies such as Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited have not changed the prices of regular petrol and diesel, which have remained largely unchanged since April 2022.
These companies control about 90 per cent of the fuel retail market in India.
India depends heavily on imports for its energy needs, sourcing about 88 per cent of its crude oil from abroad.
A significant portion of these supplies passes through the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route now under threat due to rising geopolitical tensions in the region.
Meanwhile, earlier in the day, the government said that all retail outlets are operating normally with sufficient petrol and diesel stocks to meet national demand.
It added that a rapid rollout of PNG connections is currently underway across the country.
All refineries are operating at a high capacity with adequate crude inventories. While panic buying did occur in some areas due to rumours, the government has confirmed that all retail outlets are operating normally.

Mumbai: Priyanka, who is currently set to make her much-anticipated Tollywood debut opposite Mahesh Babu in a film directed by S. S. Rajamouli, has been in the news not just for her career but also for personal rumours circulating online.
Over the past few months, reports claiming that Priyanka and Nick are heading for a split have frequently surfaced.
And now, Priyanka Chopra has finally reacted to these never ending rumours about her marriage with Nick Jonas, making it clear that the couple is happy and going strong despite constant speculation.
Reacting to these speculations, the actress dismissed them and expressed confusion over why such claims keep spreading.
As quoted by Telugu portals NTV and TV9, Priyanka said, “Nick and I are very happy and moving forward in life together. We don’t pay much attention to outside noise. But for the past few days, I’ve been hearing that my husband and I are separating.”
She further questioned the intent behind such rumours, adding, “Do people want our marriage to end? Why do such rumours keep going viral again and again? I still don’t understand.”
Addressing the differences often highlighted by critics, Priyanka spoke about their inter-cultural marriage. “We come from two different countries, our religions are different, and there is an age gap between us. Maybe these things make people talk. But we have been very happy together for eight years.”
She also shared how quickly she knew Nick was the right partner for her. “We decided to get married within six months of knowing each other. After meeting Nick, I felt he was the right person for me, and that’s why I chose to marry him.”
The actress emphasised that they choose to ignore negativity and focus on their relationship. “We don’t bother about what others say. We are very happy.”
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas tied the knot on December 1, 2018, in Jodhpur, India, with both Hindu and Christian ceremonies. The couple later welcomed their daughter, Malti Marie Chopra Jonas, via surrogacy in January 2022.
On the professional front, Priyanka continues to balance a successful career in both Bollywood and Hollywood, while also gearing up for her entry into Telugu cinema.
