The Met Gala stitched up a historic evening, raising a record-breaking $31 million while celebrating centuries of Black style and sartorial rebellion.

The 2025 Met Gala made history—not just on the red carpet, but in the books—by raising an unprecedented USD 31 million for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. It’s the first time the annual fundraising fête has crossed the USD 30 million mark, shattering last year’s total of USD 26 million and setting a new standard for fashion philanthropy.

This year’s gala toasted the opening of the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style—a sweeping celebration of Black fashion and dandyism across more than three centuries. Drawing inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s seminal book Slaves to Fashion, the exhibit explores how Black menswear has long been a vehicle of resistance, refinement, and reinvention.

The 2025 event boasted an all-star roster of co-chairs: Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour, with LeBron James serving as honorary chair. The dress code—Tailored for You—invited guests to interpret the theme through sharp suiting, classic tailoring, and reimagined menswear silhouettes that honored the spirit of Black sartorial excellence.

Red carpet highlights included Gigi Hadid in a dazzling 1940s-inspired gold Miu Miu gown and A$AP Rocky, who stunned the press by publicly confirming partner Rihanna’s third pregnancy—a moment that instantly lit up the internet.

The record-breaking funds will help power the Costume Institute’s future exhibitions, acquisitions, publications, and preservation efforts, reinforcing its role as fashion’s most influential historical institution.

Superfine: Tailoring Black Style officially opens to the public on May 10 at The Met Fifth Avenue and will run through October 26, 2025. The exhibition features works by contemporary Black designers and tributes to iconic trailblazers like André Leon Talley and Virgil Abloh—a powerful blend of past, present, and future in the world of style.
