A dramatic midair explosion ripped through the engine of an Arik Air passenger jet, leaving it shredded and charred as terrified passengers captured the moment on camera, as reported by the New York Post.
The incident unfolded Wednesday during a cross-country flight from Lagos to Port Harcourt in Nigeria. Video recorded by passengers shows the Boeing 737 flying with its left engine visibly destroyed after a loud blast was heard while the aircraft was descending.

Around 80 passengers were onboard when the explosion occurred. Several could be heard screaming in the footage as the damaged jet continued in the air with only one functioning engine.
The crew diverted the aircraft to neighbouring Benin, where it made an emergency landing. Despite the severe engine damage, the plane touched down safely. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported, though the aircraft suffered significant damage.
Passengers recalled hearing a loud bang from the left side of the plane moments before they noticed the engine had been torn apart. Arik Air and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Board acknowledged the incident and said investigators are working to determine the cause.
The Safety Investigation Board said a preliminary assessment team is travelling to Benin to secure the aircraft, document evidence, interview relevant personnel and witnesses, and retrieve flight data and cockpit voice recorder information.
An Arik Air spokesperson apologised to affected passengers, saying the airline “sincerely apologises to the affected passengers whose journey has been disrupted.”
