Original French president Nicolas Sarkozy has returned to court for an elegance reading in Paris over his faith in connection with the alleged illegal campaign financing of his 2007 national campaign by Libya, a situation that led to his 20 days in prison last year.
Sarkozy, 71, is contesting a Paris court’s decision from September that found him guilty of” legal conspiracy.”
He was given a five-year prison sentence for his alleged involvement in a plot to extort money from the late Libyan head Muammar Gaddafi in exchange for political and diplomatic favors.
The verdict was the first time a former French president had been given a sentence that included genuine prison time.
Prior to the new test, Sarkozy, who led France from 2007 to 2012, began serving his sentence before a Paris appeals court ruled in favor of his release.
The charm reading, which will last until June 3, may reexamine every piece of evidence and testimony involving Sarkozy and nine of his co-defendants, including three former ministers.
The courts determined that Sarkozy and his supporters had organized a legal organization between 2005 and 2007 to help him win the presidency.
Sarkozy has refuted accusations of wrongdoing and suggested that the complaints were motivated by politics.
Since resigning from business, he has been the subject of numerous legal circumstances, but he has remained a powerful figure in conservative politics.
His judgment for illegal campaign funding of his 2012 re-election charge was upheld by the Court of Cassation, France’s top prosecutor, in November, which required him to spend six months in house arrest while still wearing an electric hip label, a sentence that has not yet been implemented.
