Bajey ko aur film ko itna pyar dene ke liye aap sabka dil se shukriya (I can’t believe it’s been 20 years! Heartfelt thanks to all of you for giving so much love to Bajey and the film) (sic)”.
Directed by Priyadarshan, Malamaal Weekly featured an ensemble cast including Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Riteish Deshmukh, Rajpal Yadav and Asrani in key roles.
The film, inspired by the 1998 film Waking Ned, follows the story of Lilaram, played by Paresh Rawal, a lottery ticket seller in the poor village of Laholi. When one of his tickets wins a massive jackpot, Lilaram comes up with a plan to claim the prize himself, setting off a chain of humorous misunderstandings and chaotic situations.
The film’s popularity also led to several regional remakes over the years. It was remade in Telugu as Bhagyalakshmi Bumper Draw in 2006, in Kannada as Dakota Picture in 2012, and in Malayalam as Aamayum Muyalum in 2014.
Written by Aishwarya Kaushik, the film features narration by veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah. It was produced by Percept Picture Company and Sahara One Motion Pictures, with cinematography by Sameer Arya and editing by N. Gopalakrishnan and Arun Kumar.
The songs for the film were composed by Javed Ali, while the background score was created by Uttankk V. Vorra and Kannan.
