President Droupadi Murmu has approved the appointment of Justice B.R. Gavai as the 52nd Chief Justice of India. With this approval, Justice Gavai is set to assume the highest judicial position in the country, continuing a distinguished career marked by significant contributions to the Indian judiciary.

Born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Justice B.R. Gavai enrolled as an advocate on March 16, 1985. He began his legal career under the mentorship of the late Bar. Raja S. Bhonsale, former Advocate General and High Court Judge, with whom he worked until 1987. Following this, he practiced independently at the Bombay High Court from 1987 to 1990.
After 1990, Justice Gavai primarily practiced at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court, specializing in Constitutional and Administrative Law. He served as Standing Counsel for key institutions including the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Amravati Municipal Corporation, and Amravati University. His judicial career began with his appointment as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on November 14, 2003, and he was confirmed as a permanent Judge on November 12, 2005.
Throughout his tenure, he presided over cases at the Principal Seat in Mumbai as well as at the Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Panaji benches. He was elevated to the Supreme Court of India on May 24, 2019, and is set to retire on November 23, 2025.
