Two police officers have been praised for their quick thinking and bravery after rescuing a woman who fell into the Swan River in Perth.
Emergency services were called to Riverside Drive near the Kwinana Freeway on-ramp at the Swan River about 5.40am on Thursday after reports a woman was in the water and shouting for help.
The woman, believed to be aged in her 30s, was seen struggling in the water and clinging to a red channel marker about 200m offshore.
Two police officers then jumped into the water and swam out to rescue her.
When water police arrived at the scene, the woman was pulled onto a boat, along with the two officers who swam out to help her.
All three were taken to Elizabeth Quay, where they were treated by paramedics.
The woman was taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital for a precautionary medical assessment, and both officers are being monitored for symptoms of hypothermia.
WA Police Superintendent Amber Harvey praised the two officers for their efforts and has recommended they receive the Royal Life Saving award.
“This was an outstanding display of quick thinking and courage by our officers who placed their own safety at risk to assist a member of the public in distress,” she said.
“The actions of these officers exemplify the professionalism and commitment we expect from our police, particularly in dynamic and high-risk situations.
“I commend the co-ordination between the attending officers, Water Police and St John WA, which ensured a swift and safe outcome for everyone involved.”
