Many gold buyers are uncertain about the authenticity and quality of the jewellery they purchase. To mitigate this concern, most consumers prefer to buy from branded or well-known retailers.
However, Local 18 has gathered essential tips, shared by a local goldsmith, that can help consumers verify the purity of their gold jewellery with confidence. These insights have come to light following several incidents in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh, where customers discovered that 18-carat gold was being falsely sold as 22-carat. Feeling deceived, many demanded clarity.

In response, Local 18 consulted industry expert Rajesh Kumar, Director of Shri Mahalaxmi Jewellers, located on Malviya Marg, Hazaribagh, who shared vital guidance on how to identify genuine gold:
- BIS Hallmark: According to Mr Kumar, the most important step before purchasing gold is to check for the BIS hallmark, a government-certified mark that confirms the metal’s purity. For 22-carat gold, the hallmark ’22K916’—denoting 91.6% purity—should be inscribed on the item. If this marking is absent or unclear, the gold may not be of the claimed quality. Similarly, ‘750’ or ’18K’ indicates 18-carat gold.
- Loom Number: In addition to hallmarking, consumers should look for the jeweller’s identification number, also known as the license or ‘loom’ number, engraved on all hallmarked items. This number confirms that the jeweller is registered with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and provides insight into the item’s manufacturing details.
- Detailed Receipt: Mr Kumar also warned that some unscrupulous sellers use counterfeit hallmark stamps to mislead buyers. To safeguard against this, customers should always request a detailed receipt that includes the carat value, weight, making charges, and applicable taxes.
- Gold Testing Machine: For added assurance, many reputable jewellers now offer certified gold testing machines, which can quickly and accurately verify the purity of gold jewellery.
As incidents of gold misrepresentation rise, awareness of these verification methods is more important than ever. Buyers are urged to remain vigilant and informed to ensure they receive genuine value for their investment.
