An American travel vlogger’s trip to India turned traumatic after he ended up in a hospital with a severe respiratory infection. The content creator, identified as Nick Maddock of US’ Missouri, claimed caught the infection after spending 15 hours in a train journey in India.
Describing the 15-hour train journey from Varanasi to New Jalpaiguri as a “harrowing train ride,” Maddock said that it was one of his most unhygienic experiences in his six years of travelling. “Never again,” he vowed. He said that he took a third AC coach to travel from Varanasi to New Jalpaiguri.

In videos posted on Instagram, Maddock appeared with an oxygen mask and revealed that he has been admitted to a hospital due to a serious respiratory infection.
“Listen, I love India. It has warm and generous people, endless scenic landscapes, and a rich and sacred history, I can acknowledge that while simultaneously saying that my 15-hour train (in 3rd-class AC) from Varanasi to New Jalpaiguri was one of the grossest things I’ve seen in my 6 years of travelling. No higher class was available. It doesn’t have to be like that.”
In another video, Maddock showed one of the toilets in the train in a poor state, highlighting the unsanitary conditions he experienced. The video also included a dramatic text overlay revealing his condition. “He doesn’t know it yet but 72 hours from now, he will be in the hospital for a severe respiratory infection,” it read.
Maddock is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bhutan. He wrote, “Three days later, in Bhutan I was diagnosed with a severe respiratory infection. I’m doing better now but it’ll be a slow road to full recovery.”

Many shared that they never had health issues after travelling in an Indian train.
One user commented, “We never got this issue!! Its first world problems!!” Another user wrote, “Somehow he also found doctors who could diagnose that the respiratory issues were due to a train journey .. hope they narrowed it down to seat and train number also.”
One of the users commented on the reel and said, “Want fame? Defame India when you visit!” to which Nick replied, “Is it too much to ask to clean up the piles of s**t off your train floors?”
To one of the other comments, he replied, “yea in my many years of posting I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much hatred and vitriol as I have for calling out a bathroom with literal s##t on the floor and vomit caked in the sink. It’s actually surprising because people in India were so kind and warm and welcoming. I’ll try not to let the keyboard warriors change my good perspective,” he added.
