Milla Magee, the reigning Miss England 2024, has made headlines for stepping away from the global stage of the Miss World pageant, currently taking place in Telangana, India. Known for her background as a lifeguard and for raising awareness around CPR techniques, Magee’s recent decision marks a significant and controversial moment in the pageant’s 74-year history.
The 23-year-old from Newquay, Cornwall, became the first Miss England titleholder to voluntarily exit the competition, citing concerns over the outdated nature of the event and what she described as a compromising environment. “It’s stuck in the past,” Magee stated, adding, “Morally, I couldn’t be a part of it.”

According to Magee, her decision came after being placed in situations where she felt objectified and devalued. She alleged that contestants were expected to parade in front of wealthy male sponsors and likened the experience to being “farmed out for entertainment.” In a candid and emotional statement, she revealed, “I felt like a prostitute.”
“I went there to make a difference,” Magee said, “but instead we were made to sit like performing monkeys.” She further criticized the atmosphere of the competition, revealing that some of the 109 finalists were openly called “boring” by organisers—comments she felt were dismissive and degrading.
Magee officially withdrew from the pageant on May 16, 2025, and has since been replaced by another contestant representing the United Kingdom. Her departure has sparked debate around the relevance and ethics of modern beauty pageants, particularly in how contestants are treated and portrayed.
While the Miss World organization has yet to issue a detailed response to Magee’s allegations, her departure has ignited a wider conversation about reform within the industry and the need to reevaluate longstanding norms in global beauty competitions.
