Dozens of people have been evacuated from a building in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD after a suspected gas leak.

Emergency services raced to Latrobe St shortly before 11am after a call to triple-0 reported the smell of gas.

The smell was reportedly detected between the 14th and 21st floors, 9News reports.

According to Fire Rescue Victoria, about 100 people were evacuated from the building by police officers while firefighters worked to determine the leak’s location.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said several people were assessed by paramedics; however, no emergency treatment or transport to hospital was needed. More than 20 firefighters remained on scene until the incident was deemed under control about two hours later after the gas supply to the building was isolated.

The building was handed back to building management shortly before 1pm.
