If there’s one thing Karan Johar has never been shy about, it’s honesty, especially when it comes wrapped in self-deprecating humour and a side of fashion confession. In a recent rapid-fire round, the filmmaker-producer opened up about everything from his enduring love for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s cinematic aesthetics to his biggest style regrets, questionable purchases, and a refreshingly blunt take on personal fashion.

In a candid chat with The Hollywood Reporter India, the director, when asked about the last film that made him go “nice” purely because of costumes, Karan didn’t hesitate. For him, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is unmatched. Calling Bhansali one of the most aesthetic voices in Indian cinema, Johar said that every film by the filmmaker stands out for its costumes alone, reaffirming his long-standing admiration for Bhansali’s visual opulence.

“Always what Bansali does. Every movie of his, the costumes are just outstanding. He’s a filmmaker I truly regard as one of the most aesthetic voices,” Karan said.

But when the conversation turned personal, the confessions got juicier. Talking about purchases he regrets, Karan admitted that his obsession with watches in the early 2000s was entirely misplaced. “I don’t even wear watches,” he said, adding that he regrets buying all of them.

He also revealed splurging on an artist’s painting that has since lost its value after the artist landed in jail. When he later asked a friend from Saffron Art what the artwork was worth, the answer was brutally honest: nothing.

Fashion regrets followed next, and Karan was quick to single out one unforgettable look. For his 50th birthday, he wore a green, shiny Dolce & Gabbana sequin jacket—a choice he now looks back at with horror. Comparing himself to a disco ball, Johar laughed that he had no idea what he was thinking at the time.

“For my 50th, I wore this green, shiny sequin Dolce and Gabbana jacket. I swear I looked like a disco ball in that. I regret it now when I see the photos. I’m like, what was I thinking? I’m looking mad. I wanted to wear something shiny, and I think glam was the theme or whatever. I don’t even remember, but I look back, and I’m like I wasn’t pulling and then of course 10,000 other looks that have fallen flat on its face,” he added.

Unfiltered, funny, and unapologetically Karan Johar, the rapid-fire offered a glimpse into a man who understands fashion deeply, but doesn’t take himself too seriously anymore.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Johar recently produced Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, starring actors Ananya Panday and Kartik Aaryan. The film also featured Neena Gupta and Jackie Shroff in key roles.

The upcoming movies from his banner, Dharma Productions, are Nagzilla, starring Kartik Aaryan, and Chand Mera Dil, featuring Lakshya and Ananya Panday.
