Joe Root etched his name into the record books on Thursday at Trent Bridge, becoming only the fifth batter in Test cricket history to cross 13,000 runs. Root reached the milestone during the third session of Day 1 in England’s four-day Test against Zimbabwe – their first red-ball outing of the summer.

Needing 28 runs to reach the landmark, Root completed the feat by taking a single off the first delivery of the 80th over bowled by Victor Nyauchi. The crowd at Trent Bridge applauded as Root calmly raised his bat – a familiar gesture in a career filled with milestones.

  • Jacques Kallis – 159
  • Rahul Dravid – 160
  • Ricky Ponting – 162

Root has scored more than 2,000 runs each against Australia and India. He also has over 1,000 Test runs against South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies, showing his ability to perform in all conditions.

He has scored over 30 Test centuries and averages above 49. No matter where he has batted in the order, Root has remained one of England’s most reliable performers.

He now stands fifth on the list of all-time leading run-scorers in Test cricket. Only Sachin Tendulkar (15,921), Ricky Ponting (13,378), Jacques Kallis (13,289), and Rahul Dravid (13,288) have more runs than him.

Earlier in the day, England opener Ben Duckett lit up Trent Bridge with a brilliant century on his home ground. He smashed 140 from just 134 balls before he was caught at cover by Ben Curran off Wessly Madhevere’s bowling. Duckett and Zak Crawley gave England a flying start, putting on 231 for the first wicket in just 41.3 overs.
