Actor Janhvi Kapoor entered Bollywood under challenging circumstances, with her debut film Dhadak releasing shortly after the death of her mother, Sridevi. She recently opened up about struggling with depression following the film’s release, feeling that she was disliked by the audience.

Speaking on Raj Shamani’s podcast, Janhvi reflected on her 2018 debut opposite Ishaan Khatter. While audiences and industry insiders often recall Dhadak as a successful launch, Janhvi said her personal experience was far from celebratory.

She shared that whenever people praised her performance or the film’s success, it didn’t align with how she felt internally. “Every time anyone talks to me about my first film, Dhadak, they say, ‘she was so good in it’ or ‘we loved Dhadak’ But my memory of Dhadak was very different,” she said, adding, “I was depressed after Dhadak. I thought ho gaya and that packup hogaya(I am done). People hate me.”

Janhvi went on to explain that she had long depended on her mother for reassurance, and after her passing, she began seeking that same validation from the public. She admitted that she expected universal acceptance, something she now realises is unrealistic. Looking back, she said she focused entirely on criticism and ignored the film’s achievements, including its strong box office performance.

She noted that even though Dhadak was among the most commercially successful films featuring newcomers at the time, she couldn’t recognise it as a success. Instead, she convinced herself that she “sucked” and that audiences disliked her, as she was only paying attention to negative feedback.

In another conversation on the B4U Hear It Here podcast, Janhvi spoke about feeling undeserving of her opportunities, particularly during Dhadak and Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl. She said she was often made to feel that she had been handed everything because of her family background, which led her to question her own worth.

Recalling that phase, she said, “I have been made to feel that I got everything on a platter which means that I am technically worthless.” At the same time, she acknowledged the love and respect people had for her parents, adding that while she understood where the opportunities came from, “the truth is that I love acting and I live for it.”

Directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Karan Johar, Dhadak was a remake of the acclaimed Marathi film Sairat and earned over 110 crore at the box office.

Since then, Janhvi has appeared in several films including Gunjan Saxena, Ghost Stories, Roohi and Good Luck Jerry. She was most recently seen in the romantic comedy Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, directed by Shashank Khaitan and co-starring Varun Dhawan, Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf.

Looking ahead, Janhvi is set to appear in the upcoming Telugu film Peddi alongside Ram Charan, scheduled for release later this year.
