The global energy landscape is undergoing rapid changes as geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions and the transition to cleaner energy reshape how countries secure their energy needs, said Karan Adani.

Speaking at the India Today Conclave 2026 in New Delhi, Adani said the world has witnessed repeated disruptions in supply chains over the past few years, forcing countries to rethink how they manage energy and trade.

He said events such as the Covid-19 pandemic, the blockage of the Suez Canal and the Russia-Ukraine conflict have highlighted vulnerabilities in global supply routes.

Adani said these disruptions have pushed many countries to shift from highly globalised supply chains towards more regional supply networks in order to improve resilience.

“If you look at the last four to five years, there has always been constant disruption in the supply chain,” he said, referring to events ranging from Covid-19 to geopolitical conflicts that have affected global trade.

He added that heavy dependence on imported commodities also exposes countries to risks when global conflicts disrupt shipping routes or supply chains.

“Anything which is imported, any commodity where the country is reliant from an import perspective will get affected,” he said, noting that disruptions can impact crude oil, gas and LPG supplies.

Adani said this makes it important for countries like India to strengthen their energy security and reduce dependence on imports where possible.

ENERGY TRANSITION DRIVING GLOBAL CHANGE

Adani said the shift in the global energy landscape began nearly a decade ago when countries started pushing for renewable energy.

“I think the energy landscape has changed from around 2014–15 onwards when India announced its renewable energy push,” he said.

He said the transition towards renewable energy will continue, supported by new technologies such as battery storage. Nuclear energy could also play a larger role in the future as countries look for stable sources of power.

According to him, these developments will help diversify energy sources and support long-term energy security.

GLOBAL TRADE ROUTES REMAIN CRITICAL

Adani also pointed out that global energy trade depends heavily on a few key shipping routes, which can become vulnerable during geopolitical crises.

He said global shipping relies on four major choke points: the Panama Canal, the Suez Canal, the Strait of Malacca and the Strait of Hormuz.

If any of these routes are disrupted, global trade and energy shipments can be affected significantly.

Adani said countries must therefore invest in strong infrastructure and resilient supply chains to manage such risks and protect their economies.
