India’s Gulveer Singh produced a landmark performance at the NYC Half Marathon 2026 (21km), clinching the bronze medal and rewriting the national record books with a superb run in New York on Sunday, March 15.

The 27-year-old distance runner clocked 59:42, finishing third in a stacked elite men’s field and becoming the first Indian man to break the one-hour barrier in the half marathon.

Gulveer’s effort was historic not just because of the podium finish, but because it saw him lower India’s previous national men’s half-marathon record of 1:00:30, set by Avinash Sable at the Delhi Half Marathon in 2020.

By shaving 48 seconds off that mark, Gulveer delivered one of the finest road-race performances ever by an Indian long-distance runner.

The race itself was fiercely contested. Adriaan Wildschutt of South Africa won the men’s title in 59:30, while Moroccan-born American Zouhair Talbi finished second in 59:41.

Gulveer was just a second behind Talbi, underlining how competitive his run was against a world-class field. Importantly, this was also listed as Gulveer’s professional half-marathon debut, making the achievement even more impressive.

GULVEER AMINING FOR MORE

After his impressive showing in New York, Gulveer is aiming for podium finishes at both the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in July and the Japan Asian Games in September. The Army runner is currently training out of Colorado Springs in the United States.

“I’m fit and looking forward to good results in upcoming major international races,” he said.

Gulveer has emerged as a pioneer in Indian distance running, becoming the first athlete from the country to hold multiple national records across events ranging from the 3,000m on the track to the 25km road race.

The 2022 Asian Games 10,000m medallist also owns the Indian records in the men’s 5,000m and 10,000m. He enjoyed a strong outing at the 2025 Asian Championships in Gumi, South Korea, where he clinched gold in both events, and will now be targeting podium finishes in the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.
