A few mindful adjustments to your daily habits can significantly reduce the risk of infections and protect your vision in the long run.

One of the most common causes is poor makeup hygiene. Sharing eye makeup, using expired products, or failing to remove makeup before sleeping can all bring hazardous bacteria directly into the eye

Our eyes are among the most sensitive and overused organs, constantly exposed to environmental stress and lifestyle habits that often go unnoticed. Everyday routines, from makeup application to excessive screen time, can silently increase the risk of eye infections.

One of the most common causes is poor makeup hygiene. Sharing eye makeup, using expired products, or failing to remove makeup before sleeping can all bring hazardous bacteria directly into the eye. Mascara wands and eyeliner pencils that are not cleaned or replaced on a regular basis become breeding grounds for bacteria, resulting in eye diseases such as conjunctivitis or styes.

Mobile phones are another often-overlooked concern. Most individuals touch their phones hundreds of times every day, frequently after handling other surfaces. Furthermore, extended screen usage can result in digital eye strain, which weakens the eye’s natural defenses and increases susceptibility to infections. Blue light coming from devices also causes change in circadian rhythms.

Contact lens wearers are at a higher risk if they do not practise basic hygiene, such as washing their hands before handling lenses or using clean solutions. Reusing solution or sleeping with lenses on can result in a damp environment conducive to bacterial growth. It causes corneal ulceration, scarring, and, in certain cases, blindness.

Other overlooked habits include rubbing your eyes with filthy hands, using communal towels, and not wearing sunglasses in dusty or polluted areas. These behaviors may appear harmless, but they can have long-term consequences for eye health.

UV lights in sunlight may cause cataract, eyelid tumours and macular degeneration.

Prevention is simple yet powerful. Maintain hand hygiene, avoid sharing personal items, clean devices regularly, and give your eyes regular breaks from screens. A few mindful adjustments to your daily habits can significantly reduce the risk of infections and protect your vision in the long run.
