One Nation has named David Farley as its candidate for the Farrer by-election.
On Saturday afternoon at the Albury Entertainment Centre, One Nation leader Pauline Hanson joined big-name recruit Barnaby Joyce to announce the party’s candidate for the forthcoming by-election.
The by-election, to be held on May 9, was triggered by the resignation of Sussan Ley from parliament after she was ousted as leader of the Liberal Party.
Her resignation from politics in February sparked a crucial by-election in the electorate, with One Nation hoping to take the seat.
This would secure their second seat in the lower house.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Mr Farley said: “What a great step forward for Farrer, a big step forward for One Nation, and a bigger step forward for Australia.
“For Farrer to succeed, it needs political courage, and political tenacity.
“We are connecting with people,” Ms Hanson said on Saturday.
“They realise now we’re the only party that is prepared to fight for them on these issues, and that’s what we will do. I just want to say thank you to people around this country who [are] now realising what One Nation stands for.
“We stand for Australia, we stand for you, and we’ll continue to fight for you.”
Following the announcement, Ms Hanson and Mr Joyce will record a live episode of the Karl Stefanovic Show.
In an email to supporters, the episode will discuss the “future of regional Australia, immigration, cost-of-living pressures and what needs to change in Canberra”.
The One Nation leader appeared on the podcast in January as its inaugural guest.
