Matt Brittin, a former Google professional, has been appointed as the BBC’s fresh director general, succeeding Tim Davie, who quit last year after making a false change to a statement by US President Donald Trump.
Trump is suing the BBC for$ US10 billion ($ A14 billion ) after he files a lawsuit against the publicly traded British broadcaster for allegedly splicing footage from his speech on January 6, 2021, before some of his supporters stormed the US Capitol.
The journalist argued that the complaint should be dropped, arguing that Trump’s subsequent re-election demonstrated how seriously his popularity had been harmed by the alleged defamation.
Brittin became the mind of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa at Google in 2007, rising to the position of head of the UK and Ireland.
He left in 2024 and may start his new position on May 18.
The 104-year-old BBC is” an unusual, truly British asset,” according to Brittin.
” This is a time of real danger and option,” he says. He said in a statement that the BBC needs the speed and power to be both where the stories are and where the people are.

The BBC stated that he would appoint a deputy director general in response to his lack of newspaper or transmit experience.

After the broadcaster’s royal mandate expires at the end of 2027, he will have to discuss a new money agreement.
Choices include reversing the licence fee that communities who watch TV pay, switching to subscriptions or using ad-funding.
As people, especially younger ones, shift to casters and other online platforms, the BBC is fighting to stay relevant.
The BBC is also subject to intense social attention, with critics from all walks of the spectrum voicing their impartiality, putting stress on an institution that has long been regarded as one of the UK’s most trusted and enduring social fixtures.
