As political tempers flared over the Centre’s landmark decision to include caste enumeration in the next national census, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched a scathing attack on the Congress, invoking former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s opposition to caste-based data collection.
Pradhan said Nehru was against the idea and had described caste census as “anti-progress”, accusing the Congress of having historically resisted efforts to empower marginalised communities.

“Yesterday, once again, the people of the country saw through the hollow claims,” Pradhan said, targeting the opposition. “This was not a sudden decision. The government has always believed in ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’. After a long gap, the OBC community is finally getting its rightful place – this is what the government has intended.”
He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had personally led the initiative and stressed that from the first census till now, there had never been a caste-based enumeration.
“But this time, there will be one,” he declared, noting that Home Minister Amit Shah had spoken about the government working on this nearly eight months ago.
