Emerson Jones claims Brisbane title in major step towards top-100 dream

Gold Coast teenager Emerson Jones’s top-100 goal has been boosted by her W75 Brisbane final win over China’s Zhu Lin.

Jones, 17, beat Zhu 6-4 7-5 at the Queensland Tennis Centre on Sunday in the decider of the Australian Pro Tour event.

The tournament success has lifted Jones to a career-high world ranking of 144.

“It feels great to get the title here,” said Jones, who lost in the first round of last month’s Australian Open in straight sets to Canada’s Victoria Mboko.

“I’m just going to try get my women’s ranking up. Always the goal is top 100.”

In the men’s ATP75 Brisbane final, China’s former world No.31 Zhang Zhizhen beat South Australian 33-year-old Alex Bolt 6-2 6-4.

Second seeds Jake Delaney and Marc Polmans won the all-Australian men’s doubles final, beating third seeds Matt Hulme and Kody Pearson 6-2 6-3.The women’s doubles final was won by second seeds Sara Saito and Natsumi Kawagushi, who beat Gabriella Da Silva-Fick and Tenika McGiffin 6-2 6-4.

The Australian Pro Tour is a “collaboration” between the International Tennis Federation’s men’s and women’s circuits and serves as a “pathway” to the WTA and ATP Tours.”
