Dutch telecom major Odido has confirmed a massive cyberattack that exposed personal information from more than six million customer accounts, marking one of the largest data breaches in the Netherlands.

In an email to affected users, the company said, “Odido was recently hit by a cyberattack carried out by cybercriminals. Based on the investigation, we believe that your data may have been affected.”

Odido stated that the stolen data includes customer names, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, bank account numbers, birth dates and passport numbers.

The company began investigating a possible breach on February 7 with the help of internal and external experts. It found that the attack affected the system used to contact customers. Odido said it has terminated the unauthorized access and assured users that it is safe to use their phones.

The company has reported the incident to the Dutch privacy and data protection watchdog, AP.

Odido, formerly the Dutch business of T-Mobile, was acquired by private equity firms Apax and Warburg Pincus in 2021. The telecom operator serves around 8 million customers and competes with KPN and VodafoneZiggo in the Dutch market.
