A man has died in a head-on crash with a truck speeding down the Bruce Highway in the wrong lane while being “followed” by another vehicle overnight on Tuesday.

Footage has emerged of the moments leading up to the fatal collision, with reports several vehicles were travelling at high speed southbound on the wrong side of the highway about 10.30pm.

One of the vehicles, an Isuzu truck, crashed into a white Honda Accord travelling in the correct lane at Burpengary.

A 26-year-old man driving the Accord was critically injured and died at the scene.

The driver of the Isuzu was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A crime scene was declared, with sections of the highway closed until about 5am.

Detective Inspector David Harbison confirmed the truck was being “followed” by at least one other vehicle for at least a kilometre at excessive speed.

“This should not have happened. A young man just driving home … has been killed.”

The truck driver would not be interviewed by police for some time because of his injuries, Harbison said.

“It is amazing that no one else was harmed. I think we all know the dangers associated with going down the wrong way on the Bruce Highway,” Harbison said.

At least two vehicles were seen travelling on the wrong side of the Bruce Highway at Burpengary.

He said it was too early to comment on claims online that a theft had occurred at a nearby business and was linked to the crash.

Harbison addressed comments on Facebook, saying online rumours could lead to wasted resources.

He urged anyone who witnessed the crash or was involved in it to contact police.

“We are particularly interested if you have dashcam of this incident. Even a little snippet of dashcam could be vital to this investigation.”
