A 37-year-old woman was killed after being accidentally shot by her son while he was allegedly handling an illegal firearm at their home in Delhi’s Jungpura area on Monday night, police said. The deceased was identified as Sumati, who worked as a domestic help in nearby households to support her family. She is survived by her husband, a daily-wage gardener; and three children, including an 11-year-old daughter.

Preliminary enquiry revealed that the incident occurred inside the family’s dwelling in the JJ settlement. Police said the victim’s 18-year-old son, Tarun, has been identified as the accused.

According to investigators, Tarun had allegedly procured a country-made pistol illegally from an individual in the Ashram area. While he was allegedly showing the weapon to his mother, it accidentally discharged, with the bullet hitting her in the face. She died on the spot.

SON ARRESTED, WEAPON RECOVERED

Following the incident, police arrested the accused after a brief pursuit. During questioning, he led police to a nearby drain where he had allegedly discarded the firearm. The weapon was subsequently recovered. A forensic team was called to the crime scene to collect evidence and lift vital clues.

Police said an FIR has been registered under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of the Arms Act. Further investigation is underway.

Efforts are also being made to trace and arrest the person who allegedly supplied the illegal firearm to the accused. Police said the accused is being questioned in connection with the case.
